Dogue Run Farm was a 2000 acre farm
along with a mill and distillery.
This farm was supposed to be inherited
by Elenor Custis, Martha Washingtons
Granddaughter and George Washingtons ward.
along with her husband Lawrence Lewis,George
Washingtons nephew. Lawrence was the son
of George Washingtons sister Betty Washington
Lewis.George Washington let the young couple move to the Dogue Run Farm when they
returned from there honeymoon, instead of
waiting until he died to inherit it. They
did have to pay rent however.
John Gists descendents married into the
Lewis family and I've often wondered if they were
related in some way to the Washingtons??
Someone explained to me that the land the
Gists leased from Sampson Darrow/Darrell may
have been there own at one time, perhaps
sold to Sampson at the time of Josephs
death and leased back to them in the manner
of a lifetime lease. I think your John may
have been a younger brother of my Joseph,
though he may have been a cousin. Your John
did testify as to knowledge of Joseph Guess's
marriage to Constance Taylor and stated Joseph returned to "his Fathers house", after
the marriage in 1787. "My Fathers House",
could mean Joseph had been staying with Johns
parents, I just don't know???
How exciting about your trip!!!!!
I think there is an Arch. dig going on some
where on the Mt. Vernon Estate at the present
time!!!!!
Maybe you will find something that will give
us more information on our ancestors!!
I hope you can locate where Ann and Joseph lived!!!
Have a Great Time & Keep in touch!
Sandy
