The name is from de Ver or "from Ver". So, Edward was from Ver as opposed to another Edward from London. No last names back then. Van de Ver was "son of the guy from Ver". Eventually the "van" was dropped and the de Ver became, deVer, Deveer, Devier, Deaver, etc,. Iam from the Deavers and my last name is also Norman/Saxon. Burgess meant a freeman. It is related to Borgos of Spain, Burgers of Germany, Bourgouis in France. Later athe Scots-Irish brought it over to the colonies as the House of Burgess. I have seen it in variation into Polish.
