To Any DeBerry:
In doing family research for our brother-in-law who is a member of the DeBerry family, we contacted a Mrs. L.G. DeBerry in memphis, Texas, who had in her possession a letter of inquiry written in 1935 by a Mr. Parley DeBerry, who was Superintendent of West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind at Romney, West Virginia. At least, his letter was styped on the lerterhead of the school;. Romney had been marked out, and the name Terra Alta, West Virginia, had been typed in its place, which indicated that Mr. Parley DeBerry had retired from the position of Superintendent and was at that time (October 15, 1935) living in Terra Alta, West Virginia.
Mr. DeBerry said in his letter that he was doing family research; that his son-in-law who used to live at Houston, Texas, had found the name of a town. DeBerry, Texas, so he had written his letter to any DeBerry. A DeBerry family had received the letter, then had sent it to L. G. DeBerry in Memphis, Texas, from whom we got it.
These DeBerrys say that, according to their family traditions, their ancestors came from North Carolina or Virginia. They too, are Protestants, as were the families which Mr. Parley DeBerry mentioned, They have been driven out of France and emigrated to the United States at an early date in our history.
We Shall be very happy to corrospond with anyone interested in pursuing research on the DeBerry family.
Sincerely,

Dear Mrs. Graham,

Dear Mrs. Graham,

We do appreciate so very much receiving your letter- to have contacted, at last, someone who is interested in and knows something about the DeBerry Family.
Our interest comes from the fact that one of our sisters, Susan Pearl Daugherty, married April 10, 1941, at El Paso, Texas, Mabry Ezzell Navarro. Her Husband Earl (as we call him) told us that Navarro is not his family's true name, but that it should be, and is DeBerry. Then he continued by telling that his grandfather, William Edward DeBerry, with two friends of his age left their home in Texas and went on a junket to El Paso and Old Mexico during which, as a youthful caprice, they assumed names with a "Mexican" sound; his grandfather using the name of Navarro. When the boys returned home, the two friends resumed their proper names, but the grandfather continued to use "Navarro," for no particular reason except, perhaps, "to be different."Eventually he married under that name, and continued to use it.Hence, our brother-in-law now has the name.Upon hearing this, our curiousity was aroused and, since we are doing research on our own families, naturally, we began to research this name also, and have a few census readings, a death certificate, etc., the pertinent facts of which I shall include here. To date, we have data on three generations. Perhaps you, from your research, can supply us with further information, which we greatly appreciate. One other item of great interest which we have found is Edmund DeBerry who was prominent in the South Carolina Legislature for several years, but we were unable to make any connection.
Last summer, we learned through a friend, of the existance of an old letter, written some 25 years or so ago by Parley DeBerry to one of the family in Texas. We finally got in touch by telephone with two of the women, one of them still has the letter, but no one had bothered to answer it. That is the letter about which I wrote an inquiry which you recieved.
I have sent your letter on to our youngest sister, Anne Daugherty, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, who has been helping our sister, Susan Navarro, with this research, and who has many more of the facts of the case in mind. Also, the two sisters live rather close together. as it happens I was the one who had time, at the time to write some letter of inquiry; Hence, my name and address was on the letter. I feel sure that Anne Daugherty will write to you soon. She teaches, and does not have much free time, but is intensely interested in the matter. However, I shall be glad to write what letters are necessary, and to help in any way possible. It will now be of great interest to us to determine which of the seven sons is the direct ancestor of our brother-in-law.
The DeBerry history is an interesting one, and one of which to be proud.
Thank you again for your letter.Sincerely,(Helen D. Wainright)

This seems a good place to put the descendants of Archibald & mary Hazlet, his wife.

This seems a good place to put the descendants of Archibald & mary Hazlet, his wife.

I have set this up in such a way that it will not unterfere with other genealogies. (I hope.) We don't know just who the first Deberry was that came to this country. I am not even sure just who were the parents of "old John Deberry the French Huguenot " were. I am sure that Archibald is my g.g. grandfather, therefore he is #1 and the "A" sets it apart from other lines. For instance, the Graham Gen,. William is 1W1 The first child of his is 2W11 the second child is 2W12 etc.
