Just some notes that you may be interested in:
My original Australian ancestors in 1840 were Michael Gilligan and Jane O'Brien from Mountmellick Queens County Irelend (now County Laois). There were other Gilligans in Mountmellick around this time and research is being done to determine the connections with the other Gilligans. The Gilligans appear to have associations with the Deegans and what has been found so far is as follows:
William Gilligan m. Mary Deegan in Mountmellick 14/06/1830 - witnesses were James Gilligan and Betty Deegan.
One of William and Mary's children was John Gilligan b. 18/2/1838 - sponsors John Deegan and Ellen Deegan
Another child was Catherine Gilligan b. 16/2/1840 - sponsors Michael Deegan and Judy Harris
Another - Patrick Gilligan b. 24/3/1844 sponsors Patrick Carroll and Anne Deegan
Another - Margaret Gilligan b. 22/2/1846 sponsors Thomas Deegan and Ellen Deegan
John Gilligan m. Sally Deegan in Mountmellick 25/11/1836
First child was Maria Gilligan b. 18/10/1839 sponsors Patrick Deegan!!! and Mary Hanley
SEcond child was William Gilligan b. 23/4/2843 sponsors John Deegan and Ally Norman
Another interesting fact is that George Gilligan and (I think) several Deegans were hung for their alleged part in the 1798 rebellion in Mountmellick).
