I have just begun using Genealogy.com and read with interest your entry regarding the Deford family.I have a copy of an original letter written to Ida Moser Palmer of Pattersonville, Ohio on 1-1-35 by A. F DeFord of Rock Creek, Ohio
"My dear Second Cousin:-
You are 7th in line of descent from John deFord and his wife (Marie Marchad) who fled from France to save their lives from the Ax of Louis XIV who butchered more than 16,000 Protestants in one night. I always refer to him a John deFord No. 1 because there are perhaps twenty or more Johns.
His son John (2) spent 6 years in the Revolutionary War
His son John (3) whom I knew for 17 years was my great grandfather.
His son John (4) was the head of our family. Wife's name - Matilda Littell. John (4), his wife and brothers and sisters came from Fayette County, Pa and all settled in Washington and Augusta Townships, Carroll, Co., Ohio., where John (3)owned nearly 1,000 acres of land which he, John (3) gave to his 4 sons and two (2) daughters.
NOW FOR OUR FAMILY:-
JOHN (4) AND HIS WIFE RAISED ELEVEN CHILDREN
