Laurae:
According to my info James DeGeer had four wives but I do not have the name of the first wife. His wives were:
1.Unknown
2.Mary "Polly" Button
b. c 1811 in Markam Twp
d. 11th October 1859 (?)
m. c1829
3.Susanna Tate - b. 1820 in Niagara, Ont.,
d. 7th July, 1881 - married James in Stouffville ON
on 2nd June 1860
4.Hannah Terry Briggs married James on 18th Sept. 1882
James DeGeer was born Oct. 10, 1805 in Stamford Twp., Niagaga Ont. His parents were James DeGeer (James I) born c 1777 (possibly in New York State) and Elizabeth Brooks born c1778.James and Elizabeth were married in the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Caugnawaga in Fonda New York on Dec. 25th, 1798 by Rev. Abraham Van Horne. James I, his wife Elizabeth and their daughter Sarah moved to Stamford Twp. in Ontario in 1800 along with his brother Peter DeGeer, his wife Mary (nee Ostrander) and their son Peter II.
James I and Elizabeth Brooks had at least 5 other children who were all born in Ont.
Son James (or James II) moved with the family to Markham Twp. about 1816.James II became Rev. James DeGeer and was known as a "saddle bag" Methodist Minister traveling and preaching in Ontario.
It is believd that James DeGeer II had two children by his first wife named Louis DeGeer and Charity DeGeer and 9 children by his 2nd wife Mary Button including John Button DeGeer (their first born). The couple's children were:
1.John Button DeGeer b. c1829
2.Francis DeGeer
3.Catherine DeGeer (Wilson)
4.Wm. James DeGeer
5.T. Munroe DeGeer
6.Mary Ann DeGeer (Tracy)
7.Elizabeth DeGeer (Marsh)
8.James A. DeGeer (James III)
9.Susan DeGeer (Palmer)
James also was in merchandising during his marriage to Mary Button and had a store in Ballantrae, Ontario and he was also the Post Master in Ballantrae. After Mary Button's death James II returned to his wandering ways living in Pickering Twp., ON according to the 1861 census.James II and his 3rd wife Susannah moved to Minesing, Ont. in 1870.James II died Jan 24, 1893 in Minesing and is buried in Minesing Cemetetary.
