DELAMONT -soldier in British Army to Maori Wars
Looking for a De lamont, possibly named Thomas Bernard or Bernard Frances, birthplace unknown, who was in the British Army and went to fight in the Maori Wars in New Zealand in the 1860s. The regiment then proceded to NSW Australia. De lamont then appears to have worked at Victoria Barracks in Sydney, though for the British or Australian forces is not clear.
He fathered an illegitimate daughter in 1873, to a servant at the barracks, Emily Jones. They apparently lived together until his death between 1875-79. No record of this death can be found in Australia. The child was named Clelia Maud Mary Jones, and Emily conveniently altered her name at this time to Emeline Lamont Jones
Perhaps he was already married in England and this is why he didn't marry Emily. She apparently used his name, at least after his death, for when she marriedJoseph Petherbridge in 1879, she wasChristabella Emeline Lamont, spinster.
When the daughter Clelia married, she stated her name as Celelia Maud mary DE Lamont and her her father as Thomas
Bernard De Lamont, but given the proclivity to changing names, there is no guarantee that this is correct.
Does anyone have a missing soldier on their tree? Somone who went off to the Maori Wars and did not return??
I am getting desparate. - have been searching for this fellow for 20 years.
