Robert was born, 11 Apr 1881,at Jocko, MT, an old Indian agency, son of Jacques and Leona G. (Garnot) De Mers, both of French ancestry.Their children were:Robert J.; Jacques Julian; Corrine; Blanche.Jacques Demers came to Montana and was an extensive trader in Montana and in Indian territory, with posts in Couer d'Alene, De Mersville, and Frenchtown.He became the most important and successful trader in the northwest. Jaques died in 1889 when Robert De Mers was only a child.
Robert first attended school in a French settlement in Montana, and completed his education in Missoula, MT.He then worked for the Missoula Mercantile Company until he was 22 years old, then moved to Butte where he was in the grocery business. He located to Hot Springs, MT, and bought the Hot Springs Commercial Company.
Robert J. De Mers married Miss Lynetta A. Little, born in Pittsburgh, PA, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Dunlop) Little.Lynetta came to Montana only with the intention of filing on a homestead, but married and raised a family in Montana.Children of Robert and Lynetta: Jacques, Margaret Dunlop; Martha Elinor.
