The father of James Demoss (b.16Sept1781 in Taylor Co.Va. d.29May1856 Taylor Co. mar Francis Snider 6July1805) was most likely Thomas Demoss b.1753 Hampshire Co. Va.He fought in Lord Dunmore's War and Revol. and applied for a military pension 1820 from Lewis Co. Va. He may have married a woman named Hunt and d. abt 1820. His parents were William Demoss b. 22Sept1716 St. John's Parish Balto.Co. and Rachel Winchell mar. 1737 St. John's. His 1770 Will in Berkeley Co. namessons Lewis, Peter, Thomas, John, James, and Charles. All but John went West. William's father was Louis Demoss b. Holland 1694 who settled at "Frenchman's Repose" in Harford Co.Md. He d.1743 in Orange Co. Va. and left a Will naming his sons. The link between Thomas and James comes from Ada Esta Demoss 1902-1938, the daug of John W. Demoss 1869-1939.
This family is very hard to trace, but the timeline is right and there is documentation for each link. I was on a goose chase for years because my gg-Uncle, Amos L. Demoss, published a bio saying that the original immigrant was a Fr. soldier who came with Lafayette. That is not possible because Lafayette came in 1780 and James was b.1781 in Taylor Co. WV. Let me know what you think.
