Jacob Denton (1741 VA-1814 TN) and wife Mary
Jacob Denton (born 1741 in Virginia, died 1814 in Tennessee) is my 5th great grandfather. His wife was named Mary. I have seen her listed as Mary Claypool, daughter of James and Jane Claypool. The Denton's and Claypools both moved to Hampshire County, VA (now Lost River, Hardy, West Virginia??) and they knew each other. I am just confused about Mary Claypool being Jacob Denton's wife.
I have read the will of James Claypool where he lists his daughter as Mary Smith (married to a William Smith? I don't have any info on him). It also lists Jacob and Mary Denton as witnesses to his will. This is where I get confused. If James Claypool's daughter is married to Jacob Denton then why does he call her Mary Smith and list her again as Mary Denton? They seem to be two different people.
Two thoughts: 1st, that James Claypool had two daughters named Mary (less likely since he only mentioned one daughter named Mary in his will)
2nd, the Mary Denton listed as a witness in James Claypool's will was Jacob's sister Mary, not his wife. Possibly Mary Claypool Smith was widowed and then married Jacob Denton after her father died.
Does anyone have any info about who Jacob Denton married???
