Desessarts, Dessessarts, related spellings
My g-g-grandmother was Allecia Lucretia Dessessarts, b. circa 1880 in southern Louisiana, probably Washington, LA, a small village in the Opelousas area. My research into her background has brought me details w/moderate documentation, though it all follows thru in corroborating details.
Allecia's parents appear to have been Melite Gradenigo, a mulatto woman from Washington, & Hilaire Desessarts, son of Denis Richard Dechanet dit Desessarts, of Opelousas. It was very common during that time for an upper middle class man to have his legit family & a family from a mixed or black woman.
My mixed race heritage was a surprise to me & my entire family. I discovered it while researching @ the Nat'l Archives in Washington, DC. It has connected me w/other Desessarts family members, as indicated in this forum, but I've yet to find any related to the Desessarts son & the mulatto Melite. Would love to hear from any/all Desessarts/Dessessarts.
