Hi, Darrell:
I see this marriage in two secondary sources, Edith Austin Moore's "A Genealogy of the Descendants of Robert Austin of North Kingstown, RI" (privately published 1951), call no. CS 71.A93, and Benjamin F. Wilbour's "Little Compton Families" (L.C. Historical Society 1967).
Both of these just list the year of marriage, 1775. Moore spells the name Abraham "Deuel" and Wilbour has "Dewel," with Moore including a death year of 1781 for Abraham. Both list Abraham as "of Rochester, Mass." Four the first four generations Moore based her work on John Osborne Austin, the foremost RI genealogist of the 19th century, who wrotethe "Genelaogical Dictionary of Rhode Island" and was in the habit of not divulging his sources, a common omission of the books of that era.
I don't know what their source was, it could be two sources given the disparities in spelling. It occurs to me that there may be some information in "the Leonard papers," which are an unpublished collection in the possession of the New Bedford Public Library. I'll have to try to get a look at this, there may be some information on children as well.
Either spelling is very unusual for that area. If you go through Dartmouth VR for births and marriages, which in parentheses gives the actual spellings used, and total them up, I come upwith the following:
Davel 33
Devil/Devill 23
Davil 18
Devol/Devoll 11
Divel 8
Devel 5
Daviel 3
Davol 2
Daval 1
Dival 1
Duel 1
This last was for Mary Duel of Rochester who married Jethro Bennett. So it seems safe to say that in Dartmouth there is no evidence that any family aside from Abraham4 used Deuel or a phonetic equivalent.
