Hi, Richard:
Thanks for your e-mail, that certainly is a prayer answered, I hope this brings some comfort to you and your family. And I am thankful that there are people like the firefighters and steelworkers who go on searching despite the tremendous physical and emotional demands.
Going on the theory that Passaic Henry was born in Canada, my own "moon people," Halfmoon Henry and Moonshine Henry, have assisted by throwing a few rocks out of the closet for further examination:
1. Seneca7 (Ebenezer6, George5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, etc.) Deuel. He is in Cornwall, Stormont Co., Ontario (right where Ontario borders Quebec and NY) by around 1800, complete with the good spelling. There are quite a few mentions of Seneca in Canadian records, he also shows up in Williamsburg, Dundas Co.Seneca was born in Schagticoke, Rensselaer Co. (right across the river from Half Moon). DRD lists him and there is no child Henry, but it is obvious if you look closely that there a lot of gaps and things are garbled on him. And Seneca dies, in 1843, in Nauvoo, Illinois. In 1843, Nauvoo was the site of the Mormon settlement and was the largest city in Illinois, bigger than Chicago. Seneca has a son John who dies in "CA" (possibly Canada, but by usual convention this would designate California, which is certainly interesting). I think Winnebago Henry may tie in as a nephew or something to this Seneca, and you could easily spin a theory a la Cindy that incorporates the life of Passaic Henry in the known facts.
2. Jacob S. Deuel. His will is mentioned in records of Oxford Co., Ontario in 1853. He can't be the South Dakota Jacob S. Deuel because that one was still alive.
3. John Dewell. He is mentioned in an early history as being in Toronto ca. 1815. There's also a Thomas Devol in Toronto in 1837, I don't know if he's a Wilbur6 descendant or someone else.
4. Michael Duel, Philip Duel, William Duel. These are probably the brothers Michael7, Philip7, and William H.7 (Michael6, Philip5, Joseph4-3) Deuel who were in Alburg, VT via Half Moon. They purchase land in Sutton, Brome Co., PQ in 1802. Michael7 had a son Henry Slocum Deuel b. 1818, so the name runs in the family. I've had my eye on these guys for a while, but what intrigues me --- I'm getting mystical in my old age --- is that just last week someone in the Slocum forum was seeking information who is a descendant of Michael6 Deuel, which makes me hopeful that maybe he has other information on grandchildren. There is also a Michael Duell in Hemmingford, PQ (about 15 miles northwest of Champlain, NY) in 1799. There is also an Earle (surname)(another old Portsmouth/Dartmouth family) in the 1871 census for Sutton, you never know, that could be a marker name like Wilbur.
5. Ephraim Dewell. I've mentioned him before, but now I have an estimated birth year of c1774 and he is in St. Armand, Missisqoi Co., PQ before 1825.
