Devine; McDonald; Renfrew County, Ontario
Can anyone establish a link between the following: (1) SAMUEL DEVINE, born c. 1822 and living in or near Westmeath, Renfrew County, Ontario in 1849; (2) FELIX DEVINE, born c. 1802, and living in or near Renfrew, Renfrew County, in 1855; (3) MICHAEL DEVINE, born c. 1828 and living in MacNab Township, Renfrew County, in 1851; and (4) MATTHEW DEVINE, born c. 1812, and living in McNab Township, Renfrew County, in 1851.The relevant facts are:
SAMUEL DEVINE and Archibald McDonald [Macdonald] witnessed in 1849, in Westmeath, Renfrew County, the marriage of Alexander McDonald [Macdonald] to Margaret Layton of Bromley. The 1851 census of Westmeath shows a household consisting of MARY DEVINE, 70; SAMUEL DEVINE, 27; HUGH DEVINE, 18; and JAMES DEVINE, 17.
FELIX DEVINE became in 1855, in Renfrew, Renfrew County, a godparent of one of Archibald Macdonald's children, Archibald Macdonald having removed from Westmeath.. No such FELIX DEVINE can be found in the 1851 census, but the 1861 census shows in Renfrew a FELIX DIVINE, 38, WITH WIFE ANNE FRENCH DEVINE, 23, with no children but with PATRICK DEVINE, 31, living in the same household.
MICHAEL DEVINE is found in the 1851 census of McNab Township, Renfrew County, on the same page as some McDonells, who may be siblings of Archibald and Alexander Macdonald. His household consists of MICHAEL DEVINE, 23; MARY DEVINE, 30; ROTT [ROBT?] DEVINE, 25; ANDREW DEVINE, 21; JAMES DEVINE, 19; and JOHN DEVINE, 12.
MATTHEW DEVINE is found in the 1851 census of McNab Township, Renfrew County. His household consists of MATTHEW DEVINE, 39; MRS. M DEVINE, 27; ANDREW DEVINE, 11; AND MARY JANE DEVINE, 2.
