DIGGLES IN SOUTH AFRICA AND AUSTRALIA
CALLING SOUTH AFRICAN AND AUSTRALIAN DIGGLES
This relates to earlier messages concerning my quest for my Grandfather Samuel Diggle.
I now know that Samuel Diggle left his home and family in Southampton, England and went to live in Wenatchee, Washington State, USA in 1911. He was then 45 years old and accompanied by Dorothy Eldridge aged 19 years. They were almost certainly 'an item'. Samuel divorced his wife in 1913 approx. There is no evidence that Samuel and Dorothymarried in the USA nor is there evidence that either of them died in the USA. I am reasonably sure that they did get married. It is very likely that some time after 1913 they left the USA and went - where? Dorothy Eldridge was born in Melbourne, Australia so they might well have gone there. Samuel had once taken his first family to South Africa (Cape Town almost certainly) for some time but had returned to UK before 1901 - so South Africa is a possibility. He certainly did not go back to England.
DOES ANYONE IN AUSTRALIA OR SOUTH AFRICA HAVE ANTECEDENTS CALLED SAMUEL AND DOROTHY DIGGLE?
