Re: My Diggles are from ST Mary Bury Lancashire 1800's
Robert Diggle who married Margaret Ravald in 1659 had only one son who survived: Robert (1662-1758)the other son was Thomas (1669-1670) so Thomas could not have been part of your line. This Robert married Ann Oldham in 1687.
Robert and Ann's son, Robert (1700-1738) who married Elizabeth Heaton in 1728, was the oldest of their childrenwho were, listing males only : James (1702-1784)who married Ellen (maiden name unknown), John (1705-1733) and William (1710-1744). Attwood's document, from which this comes, is really concerned with Robert and Elizabeth's daughter Mary (1738-1778) who married James Guest - it was the Guest line that he was following. Mary had one brother, Robert, who was born in 1732 - date of death not known.
So this does rule out your line, as you say. Not and Edward or an Ednmund to be seen. Attwood goes on to say that 'Large numbers of Diggles lived in Prestwich during the early 17th century and it seems quite impossible to sort them out with any degree of certainty'.
