Greetings! It is so good to hear from you.My name is Vicki Fischer and I live in DeWitt, IA and own a home that I feel probably belonged to your John Dignan family.I have studied the abstract and have researched at the Historical Society and I think this info is accurate:
The home I own was built by John Dignan between the years 1868-1874; (he purchased the land in 1865). The Georgian brick home was built by one of the railroads and depots here in DeWitt.The local newspaper (town census)states he was a carriage-maker/blacksmith.His son John lived in DeWitt and worked for the railroad all his life (info via obituary).
John Dignan -1818 to 1912 - buried here in DeWitt.He was Irish Catholic.Cemetery info says he was born in County Meath Ireland. He was married to Mary -1831-1902 -also buried here in DeWitt.
John's children were:
JOHN: (died 1932) two children: May and Daryle. May married Richard Sherman and they had two children (Dick & Clare); Daryle had two children: John and Edward.
JAMES (JIM):(died 1918)buried in DeWitt;
MARY: 1855-1933 never married- buried in DeWitt --owned the home until her death when she willed it to family members);
MARGARET: --died in 1934--married a Gilmore and had son named John;
ELIZABETH: died 1939- married a W. Ketter and they had two children Lela and Julia.Julia married a W. McGruder.
Eliza: 1853-1860 buried here in DeWitt; and
JULIA: 1858-1874 --buried here in DeWitt.
I think and hope this is your family. I would love to have photos of the family that built the home I purchased.I will be happy to send you photos of the home and any information on the family history I have.
I will try to email you with the email address on this site.Please try to email me so we could exchange contact information "offline".The home is lovely and on the brick exterior the Dignan name is "scratched" as is the name "MAY".So good to hear from your family!
