Hi Cheryl, if you haven't yet checked the 1880 census (check it out through Ancestry.com), be sure to look for different spellings.Use both the "exact" spelling query and similar name query. You can also use the LDS (FamilySearch) website, but they don't provide access to the actural microfiche showing the family enumeration. My family line (Cleveland,Cincinnati) is "DETMER", but has appeared under Dittmer, Detiner, Detmer, as well as a number of the spellings that come up under "soundex". Same for Gottsch. If you know any of the children you might run a search using their name under Ancestry.com.There is some free information available that you can check, such as directories. Also run a google check, using the family names. Also run a google search on the county/State where they lived and you should find some sort of Genealogy or Historical Society page that might suggest some contact people to check for you (usually free).I would also use the message board in Ancestry.com and Genforum for the state/county they lived in and ask folks to check their data.In this Genforum, be sure to check the Detmer forum--I noticed postings of various spellings for Detmer, etc.Good luck. Pat Russell
