Mc Gruder, Cecil Roosevelt Dobbs, d. 1960, South Dakota
A lenthy article in the June l,2003 Argus Leader newpaper of Sioux Falls, SD tells about Cecil McGruder. His great-grandfather, John McGruder, was one of first black settlers. "When Cecil McGruder was a small boy, he started helping his dad, Cecil Roosevelt Dobbs, with farm work." (Does this sentence mean that his father's surname was Dobbs or McGruder.perhaps his mother a McGruder.) The father d September 1960.They farmed in Sully Co, in the area where a black colony (called Blair colony)once thrived. Settledin 1882, purchased land (not homestead to gain ownership).Once had 200 members. There are descendants living in the state, but only one in the original farmstead. The only information I have is from this article so if you have further questions contact the newspaper or the reporter who wrote the article.
