Re: DOHME family name
Hi!I thought your post was very interesting.I'm sorry to say that I don't have any info to offer you for your search, but I thought I'd reply. My family name is DOHME.We pronounce it as it looks with the long "e" on the end.I grew up being teased about my name and I've always wondered where it came from.In the area where I lived, there were probably about 5 people listed in the phone book with the same last name so I believed my name was very uncommon and unique. Now, since I've started researching my line, I've been finding Dohme's all over the place.
My great-great grandfather was Ferdinand Dohme born abt. 1827.He arrived in the U.S. around 1843 at the age of 16 with his parents, Ludwig and Henrietta DOHME, and his siblings, Louis and Charlotte. They settled in the Cincinnati, Ohio area sometime before 1849.Ferdinand married my great-great grandmother, Louisa Blumhanpf(?) in 1849.
I had a great-aunt who insisted that the original pronunciation of our last name was "Doh-may".Unfortunately, she is no longer living so that I can ask her some questions.
Anyway, thank you for your post.
