Siege of Castile in 1779 - probable error here in Donnell line
I was just reading from a 1903 DAR lineage book that Benjamin DONNELL of York Co., ME was at the Siege of Castile in 1779.
They seem to reference this as the Benjamin Donnell who was married to Sarah Kingsbury. These are my 6th grt. grandparents and I have Benjamin's Birth record from Rowley, MA which states he was born May 11, 1714 son of Nathaniel Donnell "of Boston" and Elizabeth Tod [sic].
I find it doubtful that This Benjamin was at the Siege of Castile in 1779 when he was known to have died sometime after c1760, but I doubt at about age 65 yrs. old he would have been at Castile in 1779.
This must have been another Benjamin Donnell, perhaps his son or one from the other line of the English DUNWELL's who continue to be confused with our Scottish DONALD's(Donnell's as their name was erroneously spelled over time).
In 1903 however, the DAR didn't require folks to show a whole lot of documented proof in order to gain membership.
So its very easy to see how one could confuse the numerous similarites between these two families and as anyone whose been doing genealogy for any length of time knows, once something becomes "written" its very difficult to change ones mind about it.
These days Ydna testing results have proven often that there is No link between certain families who have argued for generations that there is.
This may be only way to resolve the dispute between the Henry DUNWELL's who also have been given the spelling of their name as Donnell and our Scot POW line of Thomas DONALD (Donnell) of Boston/Rowley and York Co., ME.
If I'm wrong in my own genealogy then I'll eat crow on this, but I have tried very carefully to get the documentation to back up what I have so far. So far I only have back to Thomas DONALD the Scot POW who was banished from Scotland in 1645 to the America's landing at Boston, MA who then came to York Co., ME.
I have no proof of who our Thomas' wife was however, and the documented proof of my lineage actually begins with his son Capt. Nathaniel DONALD who was "of Boston" who married in Rowley, Essex Co., MA to Elizabeth TODD. Then by the same Rowley, MA Vital Records I found this couple as the Parents of my Capt. Benjamin DONALD (Donnell)'s birth and then later from Capt. Nathaniel Donald's will from the Lincoln Co., ME Probate records I found the mention of his wife Elizabeth and son Benjamin etc. mentioned. Several History books of Bath, Georgetown and Wiscasset, ME also give great info regarding my branch of the Donald family many of them telling of their Scottish descent.
