64.William Dorris, born Bet. 1710 - 1715 in County Down, Ireland; died 1795 in Orange Co., North Carolina. He married 65. Mary 1736 in Ireland.
65.Mary, born Bet. 1715 - 1720 in Ireland.
Notes for William Dorris:
There have been many theories on the origin of the Dorris family. One such theory is that a group of settlers fled to Ireland from Greece in the province of Dorea on account of cruelties of their Turkish rulers. More than likely the Irish referred to these settlers as the Dories which later progressed to Doris or Dorris.
Another theory is that the original Dorris settler swam to the Irish shore from the wrecks of the Spanish Armada. Still another theory is that the Dorris patriarch came to County Tyrone or County Down Ireland in the 16th or 17th century and at that time was probably known as O'Daris or O'Dowrish. In the 18th and 19th century the name progressed to Dooras or Dowrish to Doris or Dorris.
Still another theory is that the original Dorris came from the border of County Fernaugh and County Monaghan and was originally known as O'Dubhruis. From there his descendants spread southward to County Langford and County Roscommon and some northward to County Tyrone to a little town based in the vicinity of Raugh and Neagh by the 16 and 1700's.
Our family has only been able to be traced back to William Dorris. He was born in Northern Ireland between 1710-1715. He is believed to have been from an area in Northern Ireland which was historically linked to the linen trade. William migrated to the American Colonies sometime in the 1750's, probably as an indentured servant. He first settled in Middlesex New Jersey where he made a pledge to the Cranberry Presbyterian Church of eight shillings eight pence to help purchase a parsonage in February 1758. By 1770 he was living in Fairfax County Virginia and moved to Louden County Virginia by 1772. William was back in New Jersey in 1774 where he remained until 1785 when he moved to Orange County North Carolina.
It is believed that William may have married twice. His first wife may have been Nancy Irwin and his second wife may have been a Mary Williams. We do know that when William died in 1795 in North Carolina his wifes name was Mary.
William may have had as many as thirteen children. Most of these children were mentioned bygreat grandson, William Dawson Dorris, to his daughter."Our Great Grand Father, William Dorris, emigrated to New Jersey. His sons names, William,Samuel, Isaac, John, James, Joseph and Benjamin. His daughters, Mary, Sarah, Martha, Margaret and Nancy. Grandfather Joseph Dorris moved from Maryland to Orange County, North Carolina, on Stone Creek. His brother, Benjamin, died.He was cradling oats and died suddenly. The rest all moved to Tennessees in 1798, and settled in Roberston,Davidson and Sumner Counties in three settlements, and their farms joined so that they could visit each other as often as they wished and especially when there was preaching."

i. Samuel Dorris, born 1740 in Ireland; died 1824 in Sumner Co., Tennessee; married Martha Hughes 1761 in Baltimore, Maryland; born 1745 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Notes for Samuel Dorris:
It is believed that Samuel migrated to New Jersey with his parents, probably early 1750's.By 1772 Samuel was living in Fairfax Co., Virginia and in June of that year was paid 315 pounds of tobacco by his brother the Reverend Joseph Dorris, for traveling back and forth four times to appear as a witness in a court case in which Joseph sued a Samuel Smith for a debt that was owed to him. The court awarded Joseph his debt but also ordered him to pay his brother an additional 106 pounds of tobacco for his attendance.
Samuel moved his family to Louden County the following year andremained there until the later part of the 1770's when they moved to Baltimore Maryland. During their stay in Baltimore Samuel and his sons ran freight to the new frontier. This lasted untilthe 1780's. They next apparently went to Kentucky for a short stay then they moved to Hardy Co., Virginia(Now West Virginia) where they remained until 1795 when Samuel and several of his children moved to Sumner County Tennessee and then on into Robertson County Tennessee by 1797 andin 1803Samuel purchased land next to his brother Isaac. Notes for Isaac Dorris:
In December 1773 Isaac was leasing a 100 acre tract of land from Thomas Ludwell Lee in Cameron Parish Louden Co., VA. The condition of this lease demanded that while he was living on the property he was to build a tobacco house. This house was to either a frame house or built with good solid logs at least 30 feet long and 20 feet wide or a barn with the same dimensions. He was to also build a dwelling house at least 16 square feet built of logs or framed witha chimney on the outside. He was to also plant 100 winter apple trees that were no less than 30 feet from one another and one hundred peach trees that were no less than fifteen feet apart. Notes for Joseph Dorris:
Joseph was living in Louden Co. VA by 1772 and moved to Maryland a short time.Laterhe moved to Orange Co., North Caroline where on November 24, 1778 he registered 390 acres on the north side of the Haw River. In 1788 he was listed in the tax rolls of Orange Co., North Carolina in St. Asaph's district.
In 1791 he sold most of his land and moved to Tennessee where he became involved in a road building scheme to attractsettlers to the new frontier. Shortly after the Reverend Joseph had begun work on the roads the government made a treaty with the indians, the roads were no longer needed. This left Joseph with contracts that he could not fulfil and was involved in a number of lawsuits as a result.
In 1796 he moved to Robertson Co TN where he was involved in a scandal of "imprudent or criminal conduct" with the women in his congregation and was forced to resign as Reverend of his church. Despite this scandal he was successful in opening his own church.
In 1812 he served as the Brigade staff Chaplain for the west TN militia under Major General Andrew Jackson under the command of General Isaac Roberts

September 16, 1746 in Truro Parish, Fairfax Co., Virginia; died Abt. January 1793; married (2) Sally 1794; born Bef. 1755.
Notes for Benjamin William Dorris:
There have not been very many records found on Benjamin, nor has there been any good evidence that Benjamin was the son of William. Circumstantial evidence points to the probable connection between William and Benjamin. Benjamin Dorris was in Cameron Parish in Louden County Virginia by 1772 living next to his brother Joseph and their parents. In 1785 Benjamin again followed his parents and brothers John and William, this time to North Carolina. His parents and brothers settled in Orange County, Benjamin settled in a neighboring county in either Caswell or Rockingham County.
Benjamin was probably born between 1750 and 1755 in Hunterdon Co., New
Jersey. It is believed that he married Ann Cockrill about 1773 in Louden County Virginia. She was born about 1750 in Virginia and was the daughter of Joseph Cockrill, a prominent land owner. Joseph was born about 1725 in Virginia and he married Jane . Ann Cockrill Dorris died about January 1793. After her death it is believed that Benjamin may have married a woman by the name of Sally. Benjamin died shortly after this marriage in 1795 while cradling oats.
Notes for Ann Cockrill:
There is no evidence that Ann married Benjamin Dorris. She is mentioned in her fathers will as Ann Doriss. So we know that she married a Dorris, but not sure of her husbands first name. Circumstanial evidence show that she may have been the wife of Benjamin Dorris. All other Dorris during this time period have been accounted for with their wives, none named Ann.

In the mighty tide of immigration which continued to sweep westward among the early comers to what is now the Providence locality were John and Robert Doris, and William and Eleazar Given from near the Fort Nashboro settlement in Tennessee, and William Jenkins from Virginia. Turning west about 38 miles south of Red Banks (Henderson) as they came up the northwestward extension of the Old Natchez Trail, known to us as U. S. 41, they selected the rich plateau land nearby and homesteaded it. William Given's land was next to the old trail. Eleazar went west and south. The Dorris land lay to the north.
