Dortch-Carter Families of Feliciana Parish, LA
Hello Researchers,
Currently researching John W. Barnhill and Dorothy (Dolly or Dollie) Dortch of Feliciana Parish, LA who both migrated to Natchez, MS in the late 1700s and settled on land in Feliciana Parish, LA which was then a part of the West Florida Territory.
By the early 1800s Dorothy Dortch and John W. Barnhill were married and had settled on land in the St. Francisville area of Feliciana Parish, LA near other Dortch family. Some time between May 1809 and 27 July 1810 when Dorothy Dortch Barnhill remarried to Benjamin F. Wells, John W. Barnhill had passed away leaving Dorothy with three known children by that marriage.
Census of 1820 for Feliciana Parish, LA, Red Wood Creek area near St, Francisville, lists the names of Parson Carter, Dolly Wells, a widow by now, and David (Dortel) Dortch living next to each other and only one son about nine or ten living with Dorothy.
What have learned from Dortch family researcher, James Perrin, is that Dorothy (Dollie) Dortch Barnhill Wells was the daughter of David Dortch and Mary (Maria) Hay, sister of Nancy Ann Dortch and wife of Parsons Carter, and the later having settled in Feliciana Parish, LA.
After the death of a Dortch sibling of Dorothy and Ann Dortch, Parsons and Ann Dortch Carter took five of the orphaned Dortch children into their home.Court records also name John N. and Mary (Maria) A. Barnhill as having been raised in this Parson Carter Family.
Hoping that one of the Dortch researchers will come across some of the records for these above named families.
Regards,
Cathy Barnhill Osborn
