Hi, Here is some notes for Charles Dodson concerning Reuben.
REED'S CO., 1ST NC BATTALION, THOMAS CLARK COMMANDING. RANK OF PRIVATE IN 1778. ALSO, LISTED AS SERVING IN HAMON CRITZ' COMPANY OF MILITIA FROM HENRY CO. VA Family records of Pike Co., KY Dotsons list him as the father of Reuben.
ACCORDING TO WFT VOL 3,#1574:Charles Dodson - We have no record of Charles' birth, but estimate he was born about the 1740 to 1750's.We have found no record that gives the name to his wife.Nor can we determine a date of death or place of final residence.Charles is a name on lists with no solid factual information about his family to be found. The first record of Charles is the 1771 tax list of Surry co. N.C. when he is taxed for two polls (Reubanand John Dodson were also on the list)In 1772, he was assessed for three polls (Reuban remains on the list but John is gone)the Surry co. tax lists for 1773 are missing, but in 1774 Charles is not listed (through Reuban remains) inCcharles Mc Anally's District. The Surry Co. tax list for 1775 are about two thirds complete.there are no Dodsons on Charles Mc anallys very incomplete list; Reuban Dodson is on Camplins list and George Dodson is on Benjamin Clevelands's list.Charles Dodson was not listed in 1775.there are no Surry Co tax lists for 1776.In 1777, Charles Dodson re-appears on the tax lists in Jabez Jervis Distrist (This district covered an area presently in Wilkes Co.)No other Dodson's are on the 1777 tax lists for Surry co. which are estimated to be about one-third complete, so others may actually have been living there. Also in 1777, a Charles Dodson signed an oath of alligiance to Henry Co. Va.When one understands the geography of this region, it is easy to see that residents responed to the geography, not necessarily to the civil boundries. The Lambeth dosonland probably spanned the boundries of Virginia and North Carolina. In truth, they may have been uncertained in which state they livid so answered the call that come the loudest. In 1778 Charles and Reuban Dodson were on the roll of Recd's co 1 st N.C. Battalion,Thomas Clarke commander, both serving as privates. It is also reported that Charles and William dodson both served in hamon Critz Co. of Militia from Henry co., Va. The foregoing array of records is presented to show the probable family relationsips and to also show that these families were off and on found in North Carolina and virginia for several years the record of Henry co., Va show that Charles Dodson (dotson) was on the tithable list for that county beginning in 1778 assessedone white poll.In 1789 charles is taxed for 2 polls aged over 16 and under 21 years of age; indicating that he possibly had 2 sons born between 1768 and 1773. The information for Charles dodson was taken from "the Dodson (Dotson) family of North Farnham Parish, Richmond co. Va:A History and Genealogy of their descendants Vol 1" page 77
