Very good possibility. The names of Doty and Manning are both common here in Nova Scotia and next door in New Brunswick where Loyalists arrived in 1783/4 after being evacuated from the Carolinas via Florida and/or New York City.
It's more than likely that your Daniel had a mother or grandmother with surname of Manning and that both these families packed up and moved out at the same time. Have you any information from Rev War about the Manning name ?
One branch of the NS Manning family became very rich in business in the 20th century, and one of the grnadchildren now lives in a $3 million (Canadian) home in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
