Thanks Donalyn for the info............ I will make a few comments here and try to add some....... Also did you get my email i sent last night ?I can send more that way. Please email me if you have time.
Burke County NC.......... must have been an overflow area for old Rowan County.... I have focused in on the area of Burke that became McDowell County...... From there going North it was just a hop and a skip over the old Indian trail to the head waters of the New River...... Near Todd on the New River where Elk Creek comes in is where some of the Tory lived that held up Cox at his home. This Tory band must have been ranging North and crossed the VA Line.
It was indicated by Cox that Daniel Mannan was from Elk creek and was one of the leaders but Cox did not know exact where he lived.
This is from book by Edith Huggins, North Carolina Land Records, 1778, Vol 1 " "p.53#559,p.187William Newberry, 100 a. Buck Creek of Catawba Riv. on north side just above Pleasant Garden above John Chambers include, improvements occupied by Daniel Doty. Entered 5 Aug 1778. "
Pleasant Gardens still exist 30 miles East of Ashville and i am sure it is the same place because i have found Buck Creek near by running into the Catawba River. This is right near where McDowell had land.
I now think that is Daniel Manning Doty occupying the land. One could not own the land on paper from the State before 1778. You could from the British but that was not too easy.So Cox was either wrong about where Daniel Doty actually lived , or Daniel had two places, or perhaps with all the neighbors fighting - Daniel could have been here in retreat from Ashe County......... I have seen several cases where Cleveland and his bunch from Ashe/Wilkes would chase Torys South into the Upper Catawba area.
The note i have on the confiscation of estates in Sept 1779 has William Atkins as one of the fellows - you have Doty Williams .......... As you can note from the Cox dep. He says that a William Atkins make him sworn not to lift arms against this tory band...... No doubt the comma is in the wrong place in your notes and my notes that .. In both cases it reads Daniel Manning, Doty--- but knowing the men involved it should read Daniel Manning Doty... No doubt this is Mannan Doty who according to Cox was to have Chief Command ...... but he was not there at the time.
I have also found that John Barton listed with people that had their land confiscated may also have been from the Barton family of Rowan County.
The Manning name brings up a question about New Jersey connection for Daniel Manning Doty.... As you know there was an old New Jersey settlement in Rowan.... John T Doty of Indiana thinks his John Doty Sr might just be from a Doty New Jersey family.......... Perhaps the same one that Daniel Manning Doty could have been from? There was a Samuel Doty Jr that married an Elizabeth Hull. Elizabeth's mother was Mary Manning.
I have worked some in the past with a Sue Dutton Rodgers of Arkansas that comes from John Dutton. She did find out with her own research in OK a few years ago that John Dutton and wife Susannah Stepp? were Cherokee... It is my understanding that rejection to rolls was due to John Dutton and family living as Whites......At about the same time Sue also became aware that Jeremiah Dutton was the same man as Jeremiah Doaty and the Jeremiah Doty/Doughty that went from SC to KT........... She is less sure now if John is really a son of Jeremiah Dutton/Doaty.I have never seen any record that would make a close connection, nor similiar naming patterns with children of either family.......I dont think John is a son of Jeremiah & Sarah , perhaps he is a son of Jeremiah and a Cherokee , or Perhaps John took the Dutton name?
Perhaps Susannah Stepp could have been a daughter of old Golson Steep that was a Long-Hunter in the area before 1780?
I am not sure who BJ Dutton was, dont think i recall that name, perhaps Sue would know, but i have not been able to contact her for over a year. You might be right about BJ being a Benjamin Joseph Dutton - back in 2000 i contacted a Joe Dutton by email and he put me in touch with a Ben Dutton living in Gray, TN.They both come from this John Dutton Line.
Anna Doaty in the same Church as Cherokee John Dutton who might be a Doaty.........certainly worth more than pondering.....Thanks.........joedoughtyarkansas
