Hi Donalyn, Thanks for giving me the info on the early pioneers in the area. Looking again at the list of Tithables taken along the New River in 1771 - Even though there are not many Scotch-Irish in the William Herbert tax list - There are bunches of Scotch-Irish and Germans in the Company's of Walter Crockett and William Ingles which are near by at the same time.
Comparing the 1771 tax list of William Herbert's Company located around Popular Camp and that part of the New River - It sure does look like several of the men on that List later moved up river into NC - the Ashe County area.
Interesting that the Wytheville & Popular Camp area are not that far due East of Scott County where you find Anna Doaty , Stepp, and Dutton in the early 1800 hundreds.
Real Interesting that you found a Doty family in 1860 in Ohio with some members using the Doty name and one Duton........ I know that the David Doty/Doughty family from Fairfield County SC went to Ohio....... And i believe this David Doty/Doughty family are from the David Doaty that showed up with land next to Jeremiah Doaty on the New River in 1769..... No doubt in my mind that the Jeremiah Doaty 1769 Land is the Jeremiah Dutton on the tax List... David does not show up on the tax list.......... I have wondered if they ever used Dutton surname......Perhaps you have found they did........ A Joe Morgan that responded to this Daniel Doty NC Rev Loyalist Served in SC back early on after posting is from this David Doty Line...... They think Davids father was a Daniel Doty who would have been older than the Loyalist.Joe Morgan knows all about the family in Ohio so he should know for sure if this is his clan you found in 1860 Ohio.
I have two other early mention of what might be this David Doaty on the New River...... will email those to you and see if you think they might be him.
I have never seen John Doty Sr's bunch listed as Dutton nor my Joseph Doughty bunch.........
I think you are right and the Goss family is from Germany And I know that Ms Mary B Kegley has Jeremiah Dutton indexed with the Germans : Dutting, Duttinger , Dutton - some of the same family used all spellings. But she did not know he was Jeremiah Doaty because she has him and David Doaty indexed seperately in her Books.
I dont think Jeremiah Doty is from this Duttinger family or any other German family nor do any of his researchers that i am aware of.........I will forward you an email from a lady that lays out a case for him being from a French Hugenot Family from Ireland...... Most of his researchers like those for John Doty Sr of Rowan think both men are from an old East Coast Doty Family.
My Joseph Sr was married to Nancy Ann who i believe was Nancy Ann Lucas........ dont know where the Lucas came from. Joseph's children married people with surnames : Kilpatrick, Clayton, Barrett, Mayfield, & Oakley The Kilpatrick are from an Irish family that came very early directly to SC.Dont know the history on the rest. ...............joe
