I have been researching the Doty family in Belmont Co., OH for some time now. Your George A. Doty was the son of James Doty and Amelia Dunfee. His ancestors goes: Henry/Micajah/Isaac/Samuel/John. The James Doty family has given me some headaches, for example - the 1850 census for James Doty is messed up somehow. George is living with his mother in 1860 who had remarried to a Joshua Swaney (George's last name was left off).
George A. Doty is one that had disappeared on me, & I had no idea what happened to him. I have already looked at the 1880 & 1900 censuses that you mentioned. Please, I'd really like to get whatever else you have on him & his family & descendants so I can add it to my records. My e-mail is email@example.com.
In the meantime, I've attached what I had writtened about George (of course I'll have to update it based on what I get from you):
GEORGE A. DOTY (JAMES, HENRY, MICAJAH, ISAAC, SAMUEL, EDWARD) was born Bet. June 1850 – December? 1850 in Ohio, prob. Belmont Co.He married MARY E. WRIGHT August 17, 1865 in Belmont Co., Ohio (Source: Belmont Co., Ohio Marriage Records, He is 18 yrs old.).She was born Abt. 1845 in Ohio.
Note – he’s not there in the 1850 census!! There is only one George Doty given in the 1850 census – Joseph’s son- age=9 & born in VA.
In the 1860 census: There is a George (age=17 & born in VA) living with Joseph Doty in York Twp. – presumably George W. Doty. There is a George (age=10 & born in OH) living with Joshua & Amelia Swaney in York Twp. – I assume this to be George A. Doty, but he could be a child of Joshua from a previous marriage – although there is no evidence of a previous marriage. Finally, there is a George Doty (age=14 & born in OH) living with Charles Fowler in Mead Twp.
In the 1870 census: George W. Doty (age=28 & born in VA) is still living with his father – Joseph Doty in York Twp.George A. Doty (age=29 & born in OH) is living next door to Joshua & Milly Sweny in Mead Twp.
I have assumed that the George living with Joshua & Amelia Swaney in the 1860 census is this George A. Doty; so I have given his birth as in the later half of 1850.However, He would only be about 15 years old at the time of marriage – which I find unlikely.
The best evidence I have that he is a son of James is that he’s living next door to Millie Sweany (James’ wife after she remarried) in 1870 – although not strong proof – I have seen 1st and even 2nd cousins living next door to each other. Was the age of 10 years read in 1860 an error from 19?His age is given as 29 in 1870.A review of the actual census page shows that it is 10.Was his age mis-transcribed?
Also, he is last found in the 1870 census. Did he move somewhere else? There could be many more children here – i.e. from 1870 to abt. 1890.
Children of GEORGE DOTY and MARY WRIGHT are: i.IDA MAY DOTY, b. Abt. 1867 in Ohio, prob. Belmont Co. ii.BENJAMIN DOTY, b. Abt. 1868 in Ohio, prob. Belmont Co. iii.EVALINE J. DOTY, b. February 04, 1870 in York Twp, Belmont Co., Ohio (Source: Belmont Co., Ohio Birth Records.).
