The Doty family is no relationship to my family.I did this research as a gift for a friend.
I have "The Doty-Doten Family in America" compiled by Ethan Allen Doty, published for the author in 1897.The information lists sources and dates.
I checked the index for Harmon .Christian, Hattie, Jane and Mary are listed.In this book it states that SAMUEL DOTY was the 4th born child of Edward Doten and Faith (Clarke).Samuel was prob. b. prob. 1643, Plymouth, Mass and d. ca Oct. 1715.He m. Jeane (Jane) Harman, Nov. 15, 1678 in Piscataway, NJ.If you don't have information as to Samuel's life, I can send it to you.Samuel's will is on record in the office of the Secretary of State of New Jersey at Trenton.It is dated Sept. 18, 1715 and was proved Nov. 8, 1715.Samuel and Jeane (Harman) had the following children:Samuel, John, Sarah, Isaac, Edward, James, Jonathan, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Joseph, Daniel, Margaret and Nathaniel.
Edward Doty, child of Samuel Doty and Jeane (Harman) was b. May 14, 1685, Piscataway, NJ and d. Oct. or Nov. 1717.Edward's will is dated Oct. 18, 1717 and proven Nov. 19, 1717 is also filed in the office of the Secretary of State at Trenton, NJ.His will states, "Edward Dotie of Piscataway, Middlesex County, NJ, Plantor, bequeaths first to his well beloved mother, Jane Doty, the use of twelve acres of land during her life; second all his plantation to be equally divided between his "two sons, John Doty and Jeremie Dory," or if they die without issue then to go to his wife Sarah Doty and his daughter Sarah Doty; third, to his daughter Sarah Doty, 15 pounds to be paid to her when she comes of age, and fourth, to his wife Sarah Doty all of his personal property.The executors were his wife Sarah Doty and Thomas Davis of Somerset County, NJ.Edward and Sarah had: John, Jeremiah, and Sarah.
John Doty, son of Edward Doty and his wife, Sarah, was b. Piscataway, NJ about 1712 m. prob. Somerset Co., NJ but the name of his wife has not been discoverd.They probably lived in Somerville, NJ where he d. ca 1778.He was prob. a Rev. soldier, private in Capt. Jacob Ten Eyck's Co., 1st Battalion, Somerset Co., NJ Militia.His sons were in the same company.Children:
1) Jeremy (Jeremiah); not m; d. Somerville, NJ.;
2) Sarah m. William Spader.They lived NYC and had a family there.
3) Maria m. James Voorhees
4) John b. 1756
5) Peter b. ca 1758
6)Catharine m. ??? Voorhees, prob brothr of James.They moved to the "Redstone Country". Ohio
7)Elizabeth not m.; lived NYC with her sister Mrs. Sarah Spader.
8) Jane m. William Chivis.They lived in NYC.
9) Cornelius b. May 5, 1765
10) Margaret m. Daniel Spader.They lived in NYC.
At this point, you apparently leave the Doty family.That's a shame because they are truly an interesting family; i.e.
James Duane Doty (Chillus, Theodorus, Edward, Ellis, Joseph, Edward) b. Nov. 5, 1799, Salem, Washington Co., NY became the Governor of Wisconsin and Utah; Judge of the US District Court for Michigan, west of the lakes; a member of the Legislative Council of Michigan from the upper district as delegate to Congress from the Territory of Wisonsin; and much more.
Silas Doty (David, Silas, Joseph, Joseph, Edward) b. 1801, Vermont was a kleptomaniac.After serving many short terms in State Prison, in 1844 he was sentned for life, but breaking out from jail he made his way to Mexico in 1848 while the war was in progress.He made friends with both Gen. Taylor and Gen. Scott by presenting them with valuable horses.
Silas Doty (John, Silas, Joseph, Joseph, Edward) b. 1818, NY.He and his wife moved to New Orleans where he had a store.In the fall of 1853 - in one week - his store burned, his wife and only child, a son, died and Silas died asking a friend to send these facts to his relatives.
