I have seen Elizabeth Doty, Elizabeth Duff, and Elizabeth McBride put forth as the wife of Thomas McLain.I was leaning toward Elizabeth Doty until recently, because I know that there were (and probably still are) several Doty families in Greene co.However,I recently learned that Thomas & Elizabeth's grandson Shadrack's middle name was Duff. And there was a Shadrack Duff who died in Guilford Co, NC in 1781 who had a daughter Elizabeth who is said to have married Thomas McLain. This Elizabeth Duff's mother was Deborah, Elizabeth had a brother Daniel whose wife was Nancy--all names that appear in Elizabeth ??? & Thomas McLain's family.Since learning that I've been leaning toward Elizabeth Duff.I have sketchy information about their children's DOBs, and I'm not sure how accurate they are, but I have estimated DOBs ranging from 1790 to 1815.There is quite reliable information that Elizabeth Duff was born around 1768, which would have made her 47 when the 1815 birth took place--not impossible, but it makes me wonder ifThomas McLain was married twice--first to Elizabeth Duff and then to Elizabeth Doty?Have you seen a marriage record? If you search the Duff GenForum and the Dixon GenForum using "Shadrack" and "McLain", you'll see what I mean.
Is the Lauderdale in the subject title an error? It is in west TN and Greene Co. is in East TN and in 1773 must have been the wild, wild west since TN didn't become a state until 1796.
