Hi, I’m glad to find someone researching a similar Douglass line.John Douglass and Rachel Pearson are the parents of Captain Alexander Douglass.John and Rachel Douglass had 2 other sons, Robert and William and at least one daughter, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth Douglas married a Cooper.I found what appears to be the Cooper descendants on www.familysearch.com under Elizabeth Douglas AFN: C1NH-48, NJ married to James Walford Cooper AFN: C1NH-33.
I also found the following on www.genforum.genealogy.com/appleton#194, #123 and #154.
Appleton is the maiden name of Alexander Douglass’ wife.I have not yet determined if they had any children.
I have found no evidence to support the idea that Thomas is the son of Captain Alexander Douglass. But you are not the first one to mention this relationship so there must be some connection.According to a study obtained from the City of Trenton Dept. of Housing and Development. It’s titled "A Historical Study of the Douglass House, Trenton, NJ", Capt. Alexander’s will does not mention any children. He leaves things to his nephews, nieces, sister and brother-in-law (of his late wife). He doesn’t mention a child. In addition, one of the previous sources regarding Appleton states that Capt. Alexander married Miss Appleton late in life.So maybe he was a career military man and never had children.
Another source:
Genealogical and Personal Memorial of Mercer Co., New Jersey Vol. 2,(1907), pg. 767.
"Wilson Eldridge married, about 1809, Lydia, daughter of Robert Douglas, of Lamberton, and niece of Captain Alexander Douglas, of Washington’s army.It was at Captain Douglas’s house on Broad street that the council of war was held the night before the battle of Princeton, and the Douglas family, with their relatives, the Pearsons, Reeds, Hunts and others, were among the leaders in the old colonial days."
I also found this passage in Major E.M. Woodward and John F. Hageman, History of Burlington and Mercer Counties, NJ with Biographical Sketches of many of their Pioneers and Prominent Men,(1883, press of J.B.Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia, Everts and Peck), pg. 813.
"Wilson Eldridge married Lydia Douglas, daughter of Robert Douglas, of Trenton, and died Sept. 4, 1872.His wife died Nov. 6, 1875 aged eighty-six years.
Robert Douglas was a son of John and Rachel Douglas, of Lamberton.Rachel’s maiden name was Pearson, daughter of the second Robert Pearson, and she was born in 1714.Robert Douglas died when Lydia was young, and she lived with her uncle, Alexander Douglas, who was captain in Washington’s army.It was at his house on Broad Street, Trenton, that the council of war was held before the battle of Princeton."
Here is my line down to my great-grandparents:
John Douglass 1710 - m. Rachel Pearson 1710 -
Robert Douglass 1769 -
Lydia Douglas 1789 - 1875 m. Wilson Eldridge 1787 - 1872
John Eldridge 1825 - 1918 m. Abigail Hooper 1829 - 1899
Walter Eldridge 1867 - 1929 m. Ida Smith 1865 - 1947
Helen Eldridge 1895 - 1986 m. Jacob Lutes Hendrickson 1892 - 1949
I would love to compare notes.
Sherry
