Re: Mathias Droste Family
Hi Amy, I am a grand nephew on the Lampe side of Catherine Philomena Droste Lampe, daughter of Mathias Martin Droste.I have been doing German genealogy and Windthorst history.I came into possession of a copy of "100 years 1878-1978 Droste Family" this winter.
I have found the birth place of Anna Wessler Droste, wife of Mathais Martin Droste circa 1866 and following. In the appendages of the book there is a copy print of Anna's application for a Civil War pension. It listed her birth date as November 3, 1848 and place of birth as Luntan, Germany.I looked in Meyers Orts- and there was no Luntan listed. However there was L"unten. To an American ear the pronunciation would have been very similar.
I did a search on FamilySearch.org and found L"unten. It is listed as a village church served by a larger church in Vreden.Vreden had numerous LDS microfilms listed for its records.I ordered #872876, which is an index of births and marriages, and #858923 which has actual baptismal records for the time period 1848.
On November 3, 1848 there was a Johanna Angela Wesseler baptized. Her father was a "small" farmer. Her birth date was listed as November 2.She also had two brothers named Johann Herman.I think the first one died and they passed the name on, which was the custom then.In the marriage index, on #872876 I found the marriage of the parents, September 14, 1847.
I have a high level of confidence that this is the correct Anna Wessler.1) the birth location's names are very similar; 2)the first name is a common source for the derivative "Anna"; 3)the last name is the same as the Windthorst accepted spelling plus the middle "e"; 4) birth date was only one day off; and 5) she had a younger brother with the familiar name of Herman.
Have you, by now, come into possession of a copy of the Droste book, published in 1978?
Hope this helps
