+ 2 i. Robert2 Drouin, born 16 Aug 1607 in St. Barthelemi du Pin la Garenne, Mortagne, France; died 01 Jun 1685 in La Visitation de Notre Dame, Château Richer, Montmorency, QC.
Generation No. 2
2.Robert2 Drouin (Robert1) was born 16 Aug 1607 in St. Barthelemi du Pin la Garenne, Mortagne, France, and died 01 Jun 1685 in La Visitation de Notre Dame, Château Richer, Montmorency, QC.He married (1) Anne Cloutier 27 Jul 1637 in Notre Dame de Québec City, QC (ct 27 July 1636 Jean Guyon), daughter of Zacharie Cloutier and Sainte Dupont. She was born 19 Jan 1626 in St. Jean de Montagne, Au Perche Orne, France, and died 04 Feb 1648 in Québec City, QC.He married (2) Marie Chapelier 29 Nov 1649 in Notre Dame de Québec City, QC (ct 26 Audouart), daughter of Jean Chapelier and Marguerite Dodier. She was born about 1625 in St. Etienne de Brie, Melun, France, and died 18 Mar 1697 in Hôtel Dieu de Québec City, QC.
Notes for Robert Drouin:
A brick maker, Robert was baptized 06 August 1607 in the parish of Saint-Barthélemi in Le Pin-la-Garenne (near Mortagne, diocese of Sees), Perche, the son of tile maker Robert Drouin and Marie Dubois. The ancestral home, known as Les Tuileries, is still standing along the D938 highway. Robert may be the brick maker employed by the Jesuits who is mentioned in the Relation of 1634, though this fact has not been proven. In any case, he had definitely arrived in New France by 1635 and had settled in Beauport by 1636.
He was employed by Seigneur Robert Giffard. It was in this Seigneur's house that Jean Guyon-dit-DuBuisson(in the absence of a notary) executed the first Marriage Contract in this New French Colony. This contract was for Robert Drouin and Anne Cloutier. It was signed and dated on July 27, 1636.It is the oldest marriage document preserved in the original in Canada.Anne was only ten years old when the contract was signed. They were married one and a half years later. They lived with Anne's parents, who employed the couple for three years.During this time Robert chose to practice his trade of being a Master brick layer instead of being a farmer. In 1641 his in-laws promised him a land grant. He did not receive this for another five years.
He is listed in the 1666 Beaupre census as being 60 and his second wife Marie Capelier was 42.Also listed were 8 children. Two were from his first marriage. He had six children with his first wife Anne Cloutier.Only two girls survived and they were married at 12 years old. He was a "briquetier" brick maker. In 1667 he was listed as 64 and owning 10 arpents of land value. One arpent is about one and a half English acres. In 1681 Beaupre census they have him down as being 40 ( he was closer to 75) and his wife 60. Here Etienne at 27 is the only child living with them. They now own 15 arpents.
Robert Drouin was buried 01 June 1685 in Château-Richer. An inventory of his estate revealed goods worth 732 livres. However, after deducting 8 livres for funeral costs, 15 for the church at Château-Richer, 9 livres for the cost of the inventory, 65 livres of dower and 266 livres for half of the selling price of the house (which went to Marie), there was only 152 livres to divide among five inheritors, who brought many suits and appeals before the courts dealing with the inheritance. But Robert Drouin's real legacy is in his contribution to the French-Canadian race. "It is almost impossible to trace any French-Canadian genealogy without encountering Robert Drouin among the earliest ancestors. That would seem. . .to be his greatest claim to fame."
He seems to be the ancestor of all the Drouins in the country.
Notes for Anne Cloutier:
She gave birth to three children that died before receiving a name. One was buried on 8 Nov 1641, another buried on 22 Nov 1642 and the last was born and buried in 1645, all in Québec City.
Notes for Marie Chapelier:
"Filles à Marier", 84, Marie Chapelier was born about 1625 in the parish of Saint-Etienne in Brie-Comte-Robert (near Melun) in the Brie region of Champagne, the daughter of Jean Chapelier and Marguerite Dodier. Before coming to Québec in 1649, Marie lost her father and was widowed by Pierre Petit.
On 29 November 1649, Marie married Robert Drouin in Québec City. She signed the marriage contract drawn up 26 November by notary Audouart, but her husband could not. Her cousin Robert Hache, a donné of the Jesuits and clerk of the storehouse at Québec City, was present at the contract. A clause in the contract specified that within a year or sooner if possible, Robert Drouin had to find a place for the couple to live that was closer to Québec City than his current residence at the Rivière-aux-Chiens in Beauport.
Marie apparently did not have a good relationship with the children from Robert's previous marriage, since she did not appear at any of their marriage contracts. Her son Pierre died between 1666 & 1667.This means that no record was found, yet we know that he was recorded in the 1666 census and not in the 1667 census and Jean Baptiste died between the 1667 and the 1681 census.
Marie Chapelier died 18 March 1697 at theHôtel Dieu de Québec.Hôtel Dieu was a hospital for the very sick and dying.

This pioneer sailed to Canada before 1657 because his childhood friend Charles LeFrancois (another ancestor) left France to join Romain in Beaupre, Québec. On 19 Sep 1657 Charles was witness to a wedding contract of Pierre Tremblay and Ozanne Achon.
In the 1667 Beaupre census, Romain and Genevieve's ages are not listed. They are recorded with seven children in 1681 census. He owned 1 gun, 13 horned animals and 14 arpents of land value. The "De" was dropped from his name and he was 55.His wife's name was spelt without the "u" as in Droin and she was 38.

Notes for Henri Larcheveque, (Claude & Marie Simon):
His Mother Marie Simon was the daughter of bourgeois François Simon and Louise Armoine or Lemoine from Mauléon (today: Châtiilon-sur-Sèvre, near Bressuire, diocese of Poitiers), Poitou. After her father's death, Marie came to Canada in 1644 as a single girl ("Filles à Marier", page 281).
On 06 February 1645, Henri's parents, Marie Simon married Claude Larcheveque in Québec City. It is not known if either spouse could sign the marriage contract drawn up 04 February by notary Tronquet. Claude was born about 1620 in the parish of Saint-Avoye in Grugny (near the archdiocese of Rouen), Normandie or La Gaillarde (near Dieppe) in the Pays de Caux region of Normandie, the son of Guillaume Larchevêque and Jeanne Alère or Ley.
Marie and Claude had eight children. Son Jean was baptized 14 January 1646 in Québec City followed by Jacques (16 February 1648), Henri (17 August 1650) and Anne-Marie (06 February 1653). Sadly, Anne-Marie was buried just days after her baptism, on 01 March 1653. Jacqueline, baptized 22 November 1654 at Québec City, but was buried 10 December 1654.François was baptized at Québec City 27 February 1656, followed by Pierre, who was baptized 01 November 1657, but was buried 12 days later.A second son named Jean was baptized 12 August 1659 at Québec City. The first Jean married fille du Roi Marie-Anne Poussin.
Henri's father, Claude Larcheveque, drowned 05 May 1659 while he was returning from the Île d'Orléans. Marie returned to France before the 1666 census without her four surviving children, though it is not known if she went to settle an inheritance or was intending to return for good. Marie Simon died in France shortly before 08 July 1668. It seems that she may have intended on remaining in France, for she had brought with her the title to the lands that Claude had owned at the Coteau Sainte-Geneviève in Québec, as testified to by her sons before the Prévôté de Québec on the above date. Perhaps she had gone to France with the title with the intention of selling the land.

Notes for Pierre Maheu, Sieur Des Hazards:
This pioneer's name is spelt in many different ways.In the 1666 Beaupre census it was spelt "Maheut".Few people could read or write in those days and they did not care if it was right or wrong.Perhaps it once was the biblical name "Mathieu".He was sieur of Hazards. Hence the misspelt "dit" name.
On 22 May 1651 he signed a contract to work in New France. He did not leave till 1655 with his very good friend Jean Trudel. After working out their three year contract as farmers for Nicolas Juchereau, sieur of St. Denis, they each received 31 arpents of land situated next to each other.
Between 1661 and 1663 all inhabitants of the coast suffered greatly with chicken pox, Iroquois attacks and a large earthquake.Pierre and his friend Jean Trudel never moved from this area.In 1664 Pierre was elected as church warden of L'Ange Gardien.
In the 1666 Beaupre census Pierre was listed as 32 and Jeanne as 19.His trade that of a "maheut" a canvas weaver. In 1681 Beaupre he was 57 and she was 34.He owned one rifle,5 horned animals and 25 arpents.

Notes for Marguerite-Marie Bouchard:
She was born on 10 March 1674 and baptized on the 16th at Sainte Anne de Beaupre. When she was 19 years old, Marguerite had her first of three illegitimate children, Jean Gagnon, born on 17 Sept. 1693.His father was Jean Gagnon, the son of Jean Gagnon and Marguerite Drouin. Marguerite Bouchard's son Jean Gagnon married Marguerite Marquet in 1722.
Then on 19 Oct.1696, we find her (in the birth information at PRDH) listed as the mother of another illegitimate child. This daughter named Marie Francoise Dubroc, born on 19 October 1696, was baptized at Rivière Ouelle on 25 January 1697. This daughter was the issue of another liaison, with the Bayonnais merchant Pierre Dubroc who, on 30 July 1697 (contract Chambalon), promised to pay Francois Dutertre 300 livres if he agreed to keep the child, raise her and educate her as if she was his own daughter. This child's father is listed only as Dubroc. Marguerite Bouchard's daughter Marie Francoise Dubroc married Alexis Lavoie on 7 Jan. 1724.
On 29 July 1697, Marguerite Bouchard was married for the first time. She married Francois Dutartre. He born in 1670's son of Claude and Marie Giloux, from Saint-Michel d'Angers, Anjou (Maine-et-Loire).He was noted as being at theHôtel Dieu in Québec City on 17 Nov 1695 at the age of 25.That August, Marguerite found herself pregnant once more.Together Francois and Marguerite had only one child. A son, Francois was born on 11 May 1698.It seems that Marguerite's husband did not stay around for the birth of his son.Jette claims that he left for Old France 12 years before he died there in 1709.This would have put him in Europe in 1697.He never returned to Canada.Their son Francois Dutarte married Marie Gertrude Dube in 1721.
On 21 July 1704 (while her husband was still alive in Old France), Marguerite gave birth to another "Enfant Naturel" (illegitimate child) named Jean Baptiste-dit-Guillaume Soucy. His father was Guillaume Soucy/Lavigne.Their son Jean Baptiste married Catherine Demers/Dumais in 1726.
Life must has been very difficult for Marguerite during those pioneering days in New France (Canada). Her mother died before she turned 8 and her father then married a widow with two young children of her own. Those times were difficult even when ones husband was around to help provide for the family. In order to survive with her children, she may have had to live with her father . She died on 8 Feb. 1724, just one month after her daughter married Alexis Lavoie.
Court Cases
In 1693, Marguerite's father Michel did not hide his shame to see an illegitimate child born to his minor daughter Marguerite. The child was baptized at L'Ancienne-Lorette on 17 September by the Jesuit Michel-Germain de Couvert. He was given the same first name as his father Jean Gagnon. For Michel Bouchard, the matter did not remain there. He demanded reparation from the young man who had seduced his daughter and he sued him until he received satisfaction. The matter was brought to the Provost of Québec who, on 14 November, condemned Gagnon. The latter filed an appeal on the 18th and brought his case before the Sovereign Council which heard it on the 23rd of the same month. The tribunal of the lower court had ordered Gagnon to take care of the child and to feed and raise him in the Catholic and Roman religion until he reached an age to earn his living and learn a trade. Meanwhile, he must pay 20 sols a day to Marguerite Bouchard, in addition to giving alms of 100 sols to the poor of the General-Hospital of Québec and to pay 200 livres in damages to the mother.
The case was continued on 22 December 1693 and 11 January 1694. At that time, the Council ordered the suit be continued "for reasons of crime of Rape and subornation and drugs claimed given to the said Bouchard in order to make her lose the child with which she was pregnant".
During the lawsuits, the child would be entrusted to a nurse to whom Gagnon would provide the necessary clothes in addition to 10 sols daily.
The suit ended on 27 February, in an out-of-court settlement, reached before the notary Chambalon between Michel Bouchard and Gagnons lawyer, Charles Aubert de la Chesnaye. The latter insisted on ending the lawsuits, in order, he said, to terminate the lawsuits. Such continuation, he reasoned, would only serve to destroy Gagnon and use up the parties assets. The agreement provided that Gagnon take charge of the child, have him fed and supported by his nurse until the age of 20, in addition to paying the 230 livres which the lawyer paid to Michel Bouchard in order to put an end to the case.
The last years of Michel Bouchard give us a glimpse of what had become of the man in his new city environment. He was not only a tavern keeper but also a businessman with all the problems which that brought. We see him also fulfilling his religious duties. The unfortunate adventure with his daughter Marguerite being amicably settled, Michel Bouchard went on to live his life in moments of calm interrupted with a few other lawsuits, less important than the other ones. On the first of March 1694, the carpenter Robert Choret had the Sovereign Council intervene to carry out a sentence from the Provost against the tavern-keeper Bouchard from whom he claimed 70 livres for food provided to Marguerite's child for two months and ten days. We know now who kept the child during this time. Settled at Québec since his remarriage to Marguerite Lerouge in 1686, Choret already had a large family of 17 children between two marriages.

=======================
Hi, I have decided to post all my Québec pioneer ancestor at the different GenForums because a lot of individuals doing genealogy research don’t realize that their ancestors can be found as early as the 1600s.
My resources are limited because I live in Oregon. I hope that you use this information only as a guide. I welcome corrections and additions from anyone that has access to the original files.
Originally I paid a genealogy society to trace the direct lines for 6 of my 8 great grandparents. They used the books that were compiled by volunteers for each parish. Because so many individuals had the same name, I eventually found some errors in these books. Then I used Tanguay and found out that he may be about 75% right and Jette (that goes to 1730) is about 90% right. Then just as I thought that I was finished, I found PRDH (University of Montreal) and I believe that they may be 98% right and still make corrections to their records. They go up to 1799 for marriage contracts and 1850 for some deaths. Some people have the luxury of having the original records at their disposal. I do not have that and with 17,000 individuals in my data base, I can not afford to pay for copies of all the originals. At that point I confirmed every that I had with the records at PRDH. Whenever I say “about” for a birth date it means that PRDH did not find it or if it is in the 1800s, I did not look it up because of my lack of resources.
PRDH uses the most common spelling variation for the names. This makes it easier to trace the families. They do not always use the original name that appears on the contracts or birth records. That is ok with me, because many individuals before the 1900s could not sign their names and did not even care how others spelt it. As a result the same person’s name took on a variety of spellings. I also kept the “dit” (aka) names because eventually brothers from the same family, picked a different aka name. For a very small fee PRDH has all the Canadian records from 1600-1799 and some death dates up to 1850.Their records are about 18% accurate. They can be found at:

As for the pioneers, I also used Peter Gagné’s English books on the single girls that arrived in New France between 1634 & 1662 and his book on the single girls that are referred to as the King’s Daughters that arrived between 1663 & 1673. These girls were recruited and paid by the King to go to New France (Québec) to get married and colonize the area.
For the 1800-1900s I paid to prove my direct lines. My data for their extended family come from people on the web. The program that I use does not allow for baptismal dates, so if I don’t have a birth date, I use the baptismal date. The same goes for death vs. burial dates and actual wedding vs. contract dates. The newer programs have these features, but I will not be going through 18,000 records to make the changes.
Use this information as a guide only. I view genealogy as a hobby and not as pure science. As for the stories, I got them all in French on the web and I translated them for my grandchildren.I had not read or spoken French in over 40 years, so it was difficult and may not be the best translation.
Enjoy, Janet
