I want to correct a statement in my earlier posting today.I inadvertently repeated what many who have summarized the records or repeated in publications have reported, i.e.that Sophie Buchanan Duckett was a second wife of Richard Jacob and that as his widow she requested permission from the legislature to sell his real estate.
This statement is another of what I believe are errors in the reported history of the Ducketts in MD.I will investigate further, but it is reasonable and my belief that although Sophie did marry into the family in about 1795, her husband was more probably Basil, not his father Richard Jacob.Based on his age it seems unlikely Richard Jacob died leaving minor children to support. It would not be unusual if his son Basil died shortly after his father's death, leaving a widow and minor children to support. Therefore I anticipate further investigation will establish that it was Basil's widow who petitioned the legislature for permission to sell Richard Jacob's real estate to provide for Basil's minor children.Since Richard Jacob had left his real estate to his son Basil, it would be quite logical for Basil's widow to want to use this asset to provide for Basil's minor children.
Again, many have identified Sophie as Richard Jacob's second wife, but I would seriously question that identification.
