Preston Turner, the noted pioneer of Turner and Duckworth genealogy, and other families in Georgia, passed away 2 Sept. 2003. His obituary ran as follows:
C. Y. PRESTON TURNER:Mr. C. Y. Preston Turner, age 81, of Blairsville, (GA), passed away Tuesday morning, September 2, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Turner was born Wednesday, May 3, 1922 in Union County (GA), a son of John Jarrett Turner, Sr., and and Nola (Nix) Turner. He had lived in Union County most of his life, and was a life long member of Old Liberty Church.
He was a retired school teacher and a World War II veteran of the Southwest pacific, serving for seven years in the Army Medical Corps and receiving four battle stars. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Price and Edward Turner, and a step-granddaughter, Michelle Born. Preston is remembered as a noted educator, artist, poet and historian.
Survivors include his wife of the home, two step-daughters, two sisters, four brothers, three step-grandsons also survive, along with many other relatives and a host of friends.
A memorial service was held at Shady Grove Church near Blairsville, at 2:30 PM, Sunday, September 7, 2003 with Rev. Bob Bones officiating. Eulogies were provided by nephews William C. Collins, Jr., andDr. JosephB. Turner. Niece, Carolyn Collins Kelly, read a selected poem written by Preston, entitled “Life’s Highway.” Music was provided by John Nix and Sam Ensley. Military honors were provided by the North Georgia Honor Guard.
