Hi Paul - there are quite a few with my variant spelling here in NZ - two families of them that settled at different times. One of 'the other family' (ie, not closely related to me) was an early mayor of Auckland, and there is a Dignan Street in Pt Chevalier there. Here in Dunedin there is a prominent local politician called Campbell Duignan, too. So you are not alone! Sadly I know little of the early history of the Duignans, the 'four masters' messages on this forum say most of what I knew before. There is a good book on the early Irish settlers of New Zealand which gives some info on D(u)ignans on this side of the world, but unfortunately the title eludes me at the moment.
