Robert Dunlop, Brewer/Maltster, 19th Century Albany, N.Y.
Seeking information on the family of Robert Dunlop, listed in Howell & Tenney's Bicentennial History of Albany and Schenectady Counties on page 556, describes Robert Dunlop as being one of Albany's first brewers.According to records of the Albany Rural Cemetery, Robert Dunlop was born in Scotland and died in the Town of Watervliet, Albany County on December 16, 1851 at age 74y 11m 18d which would make him born in about 1777.Dunlop was one of the founders of the Watervliet Turnpike Company constructing a road north out of the City of Albany into West Troy. His son, Robert Jr. is listed as also being born in Scotland in 1810 and died at Jamesville, N.Y. in 1882 age 72y 5m 16d.Both are buried in the Dunlop family lot at Albany Rural Cemetery.Dunlop owned a Malt house on the Watervliet Turnpike between Albany and West Troy.A 1910 Albany Times Union newspaper article described a fire occuring at the Dunlop Mansion on the Troy Road (Watervliet Turnpike) which claimed the life of one of the tennants in whose room the fire started.Any information on the family of Robert Dunlop or Robert Jr. would be very much appreciated.I am seeking photos or portraits of the family or home or information about the brewery or Dunlops involvement with the Watervliet Turnpike Company. Please contact Kevin Franklin, Historian, Town of Colonie & Village of Menands at the e-mail address listed for this posting.Thanks.
