Interesting info about Mark Hill DUNNELL of Maine > MN

By Silver Hawk November 18, 2004 at 05:26:11

I originally posted this on the DONNELL page a while back but now that GenForum has added a DUNNELL page it seems more appropriate here. There is also a link to a page that has a picture of Mark Hill DUNNELL who was from Maine (Portland and his family from York Co., ME) to Minnesota.
I will post it as a Reply to this message.
Hope this helps someone.
I was particularly excited to see Mark Hill DUNNELL's statement about his family origins being from SCOTLAND and the Clan DONALD which was how my 5th grt. grandmother's last name was spelled on her Marriage record in Buxton, York Co., ME. They were from the Clan MacDonald...which from what I can gather..."Mac" or "Mc" simply means "son of" in Gaelic...thus "son of" Donald.

From a 2001 Dunnell, MN 100th Anniversary announcement on the Scottish news page Electric Scotland, I found the following bits of info...
Dunnell, MN will celebrate its 100th anniversary of the founding of the town. The town of Dunnell was named for a famous citizen of MN, Mark Hill DUNNELL who served 8 terms in the US Congress. Mark Dunnell moved to MN From MAINE after he served in the Civil War.
His predecessors were SCOTS of the Clan DONALD and they settled in Maine starting in 1634.
Henry DONNELL landed in Virginia in 1634 on board the merchant ship 'Bonaventure' on a fishing voyage. He settled in YORK, Maine where he was a landowner.

I guess VA was as close as he could get in 1634 to Maine on board that ship. He probably caught another one going to Boston later that took him closer to York, Maine.
Interesting...I've always believed the Donnell's descended from Scots because my 5th grt. grandmother's marriage record has her last name as DONALD, even though there was a note saying the name was more commonly spelled DUNNELL and even though her father was Benjamin DONNELL of Georgetown, Maine formerly of York Co., Maine and that was the way he spelled the name and the way his father did too per his will in the old Lincoln Co. Probate records (Nathaniel Donnell and wife Elizabeth TODD).
Also because of the early Scottish records of the MacDonnell's.

Now I wonder WHO this Mark Hill Donnell/Dunnell's parents were?
I thought this was an interesting bit of info. They honor this man for his service so I guess from old historical records in that town they have done their homework to decipher his lineage and history, probably from his own telling of family stories too.
