I am trying to find the parents of Phebe Lawson, who married William H. Durham sometime around 1844. (This date comes from the fact that their oldest son - James M. Durham, was born around 1845).I have several leads:
1) Phebe Lawson is most likely the daughter of James Lawson and Nancy Hurt.According to the marriage record of James M. Durham (her son), William and Phebe were living in Patrick County, VA around 1845.Since their daughter Sarah was born in 1848 and in North Carolina - I presumed William and Phebe moved to Surry County, NC around 1847.Henry Durham and Nancy Durham - also listed in the 1850 census for Surry County, NC and living in the Mount Airy area - also appears to have moved to Surry County, NC around 1847.Considering the names of William and Phebe's children, their first born is named "James" (possibly for James Lawson) and their second oldest daughter is named "Nancy" (possibly after Nancy Hurt).Since their oldest daughter is named "Sarah", I would say that the Sarah "Sally" Durham (age 64) living with Nancy Durham in the 1850 census is William's mother. Also, consider that James and Nancy Lawson and their children would later end up in Tazewell County, VA, which is where William H. Durham and Phebe (Lawson) are living in the 1880 census.
2) My second possibility is that Phebe Lawson may be the daughter of William Lawson who is living next door to Henry Durham in the 1840 census for Patrick County, VA.This William Lawson is shown to have at least 7 daughters, 5 of which have been identified.(No record has been found confirming that Phebe is a daughter of William Lawson).
