Efforts to trace the ancestry of the George Washington Durham who was the second husband of Wila Rector have, thus far, been unsuccessful.George was born and died in Indiana, but married the widow, Wila Louisa Rector Proctor on 20 Feb 1914 in Rockcastle County. They had 10 children, noting the birth places of the children, George and family must have moved to Montgomery County, IN about 1920.George died there in Montgomery County in 1945 and is buried there. His grave marker indicates a birth year of 1871, though some descendants believe he was born in 1875. While reviewing some family tree files, I came across the 1880 census listing for Robert S Adams of Rockcastle County. It is as follows: Household:Rockcastle County 1880 census: Robert ADAMSSelfMMaleW28KYFarmerKYKY Polly A. Mary A Durham and Robert S Adams married about 1864 or 1865, perhaps in an adjoining county as I can’t find the marriage in Rockcastle listings.Mary was the daughter of Joseph Durham (my g g/f) and his unknown first wife.Joseph Durham apparently lived in Indiana from at least 1837 to after 1850.I haven’t found the location he lived in Indiana, but he had at least three children born there. The two daughters, Julia and Mary came to Rockcastle County, while son, John Hardin Durham born 18 Jan 1842 remained in Indiana. The George Aurham, SSon age 4 born Indiana shown in the above census I believe to be George Durham, most likely a nephew of Polly A Adams. He may be the son of her brother, John Hardin Durham that stayed in Indiana.I feel sure that the surname is not Aurham, and that he is not the step son of anyone in that household. And if his name is George Durham, he may well be the George Washington Durham that married (1) Sarah Rachel Burdine 9 July 1898 Rockcastle County, and had children Alfred, Elbert, Mary, and Alberta; (2) Wila Louisa Rector Proctor 1914 Rockcastle and had children Ocie, Rissie Edith, Christine, Grace, Irene, Patty, Anna, Raymond, Shirley and Bessie. Also, finding information for George W may lead to information for Joseph Durham’s Indiana family. More information for George Washington Durham, 24 Jun 2005.While I haven’t found any direct information that this George Durham is the son of John Hardin Durham, I think available makes that a “most likely”.George Washington Durham’s first wife was Sarah Rachel Burdine, born March 1879 Rockcastle County, I haven’t found a death date for her but believe GW was a widower when he married Willa Rector Proctor 1914 in Rockcastle County.GW married Sarah Rachel 9 July 1898 in Rockcastle.Their children were: 1. Elbert, born 11 May 1899 Rockcastle County, died 1971 Crawfordsville, IN. 2. Mary, born about 1902 KY. 3. Alfred, born about 1905 Rockcastle County. 4. Bert, born about 1910 KY. 5. Alberta, born about 1912 KY.
I have George Washington Durham’s birth as Dec 1875 Indiana, as noted above the birth listed on his gravestone is 1871.I have a death date for Ellen Daugherty, first wife of John Hardin Durham as Nov 1876.My theory is George was an infant and John Hardin left the baby with his sister, Mary Adams when his wife Ellen died.We know John H was in the area in 1877 as he was in a court case in Rockcastle concerning the estate of his father Joseph Durham. Wila Rector Proctor Durham was the daughter of Thomas Rector, stepson of Joseph Durham.I will appreciate any information toward further identifying the parents of George W Durham. Gene Martin
