I offered to answer these queries a year ago and received no response...Anyhow ...
DeKalb County, Tenn. , 1880 census, Clear Fork, District #
Hosehold # 138 =
Bluford Mathis42 born Tn Mary A. (Derting_34married 1870 James B.10, Henry 9, Mattie 5 John E. 2. Ader 5/12 born Jan.Mary T. 12 (probably Mary's dau by a first marriage). If so, she was not born a Derting but marrieed one earlier.or - if young Mary was a Mathia, then Bluford's dau by an earlier marriage. I think the latter is the case.
Next door was David "Dirting" . age 31,and the next house (farm) was James "Derting", 32.. No ewonder their mpther died young with children 31,,32, 34.
Household # 150 is the Samuel L. Derting yiou asked about. His second wife was Mary F. Knight, 33. Children were Nancy J. 26, George W. 19. James B. 11 and step-ch Walter L. Knight 10 and Sarah Knight, 8, So the others was by Samuel's first wife whose name I may have.
In 1850 DeKalb. Liberty, Pea Ridge, District # 3 was HH # 40 - John "Dirting" 76,born Va,wife Selena (Salina ?) )Tittle) born Tn,John , age 24 wgo married an Adsamson and died in 1920, William 22, Sarah 20. John's first wife was Mary (Spurlock)Dorton/Derting. As I recall,, John lived just over the county line from Cannon County near Sycamore Creek northwest of Gasaway in Cannon County.
As yiou can see, by the 1880 census, these people were still using variations of the Derting name but later generation changed to "Dutton:".
Quite a few of these Spurlock-related families went to Madison County, Ark in the 1870s and 1880s. A town in that county is named Dutton. I have wondered if there is a connection. Does anyone know ?
