The large certificate (approx 20" x 15") was awarded by the State of Vermont to Ephriam Dutton for service with the Vermont Volunteers during the Civil war. The certificate is dated 1871. It has at some stage and for some reason that we can't guess, been torn horizontally and cleanly in half...old tape stains remain but when under glass the tear is not glaringly obvious. We think there is a bit of a story there somewhere!!! With this is a carte de visite of Dutton (named on reverse) and a 1940 certificate confirming that Ephriam D. Dutton served with Coy H, Fourth Regt, Vermont Volunteer Infantry from Sept 7, 1861 until released from service due to disability on June 29, 1862. Finally, there is his pocket bible (printed in 1861) with his name and Regiment inked on the flyleaf. Dutton carried this with him during his military service.
