I have tried to pull together all I know about the family of Mareen Duvall and Martha "Patsy" West.If anyone has a good copy of the information in Mareen Duvall's Bible, I would certainly like to get a copy of it.Any corrections would be most welcome.
An Analysis of the family of Mareen Duvall (Abt. 1773 - 1844) and his wife Martha "Patsy" West (Abt. 1777 - 1842/50)
Harry Wright Newman wrote “Mareen Duvall of Middle Plantation” in 1952.On pages 125-6 he provides the following information on the children of Mareen and Martha (West) Duvall:
“1.Richard M.J. Duvall
3.William C. Duvall
4.Elizabeth D. Duvall married ______ Briscoe.
5. Sophia A. Duvall married ______ West.
6.Maria Duvall married ______Williams.
7.Maria F.G. Duvall married ______ Reser.”
“ His [Mareen Duvall ‘s] last will and testament, dated March 21, 1842, was proved in Scott County, Kentucky, during January 1845.He named his wife Martha, and the following children – Richard Duvall, Edward Duvall, William Duvall, Elizabeth Briscoe, Sophia West, Maria Williams, and the children of his deceased daughter, Maria F.G. Reser, that is, Martha M. Peak, Ann Eliza Pickett, Charles W. Reser, Sophia A. Jones, Helen M. Baker, Napoleon Reser, and Leonidas Reser.”
A family Bible record exists for the family of Mareen and Martha (West) Duvall. The Bible recordwas given by Mrs. June W. Gale (nee Hackett) of Owenton, KY, to the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort, KY, in 1957.A note on the title page of the Bible indicates that it is stored in the KHS’s vault. The title page of the Bible has a publication date of 1801.I only have a copy of the first page of family record.I presume there are other pages. It was sent to me by Carol Mitchell in Dec. of 1998.It is a poor Xerox copy and a few of its dates are difficult to read, but all months and years are clear. The Bible record gives the following information:
Mareen Duvall and Martha his wife was married 31st Day of Dec. 1795
Maria Duvall was born 9th (?) Day of May 1797
Rachel P.(?) Duvall was born 21st July 1799 and died 25 Jan. 1803
Eliza Duvall was born 27th(?) Jan. 1802
Sophia Duvall was born 1st Sep. 1804
Marcia Duvall was born 15th Jan. 1807
Richard Mareen Johnson Duvall was born 5th Aug 1809
William Cornelius Duvall was born 20th Jan. 1812
Edward Lewis Duvall was born 1st Nov. 1815
This Bible record appears to have been written by the same hand and is very uniform. It seems possible that it was written at one time – and not as the births occurred.
There is another Bible record that is pertinent. It is that of the Jefferson Peak family.A copy of the record can be found on Ancestry.com entitled “Our Family Tree Higgins/Hill.” Jefferson Peak married Martha M. Resor. The Bible provides the following information:
Jefferson Peak born Apr. 1st 1801
Martha M Resor born May 7, 1812
William Resor born 1790 and died 1850
Maria Resor, wife of William Resor, born 1796 and died 1838
1820 Census of Georgetown, Scott Co., KY
(Indexed by Ancestry.com as “Marcine” Duvall)
2 males born 1810-20 (William C., born 1812, and Edward Lewis, born 1815)
1 male born 1804-10 (Richard M.J., born 1809)
1 male born before 1775 (Mareen)(say abt. 1773)
1 female born 1804-10 (Marcia, born 1807)
1 female born aft 1775 (Martha)(Say abt. 1777)
(Maria married abt. 1811, Rachel died in 1803, Eliza married in 1819, and Sophia was married by 1820.This census fits the family of Mareen and Martha Duvall perfectly.I have been unable to find this family on the 1810, 1830 or 1840 census. Many parts of these censuses have faded badly and are unreadable. It also seems that some parts of the censuses for Scott Co. may not have survived.)
The first problem to be addressed is that Newman, in his Duvall history, has two daughters named Maria in the family. The Bible record makes it clear that Maria was born in May 1797 and that Marcia was born in Jan. 1807.If one of the daughters was actually named Marcia, then she should appear on the 1850 Census as a Marcia married to a Williams or a Resor. And indeed she does.
1850 Census of Scott Co., KY, p. 454
Merit Williams, 52, farmer, born KY, $3,300 RE
Marcia Williams, 43, born KY(born 1806/07)
Granville Williams, 16, born KY(born 1833-34)
Archibald Williams, 30, born KY
It is clear that Marcia is not the mother of Archibald Williams.Marriage records show Merritt Williams married his first wife, Eliza Smith, on 20 Apr. 1819 in Fayette Co., KY.Eliza Smith’s tombstone has her birth date as 11 Oct. 1803 and her death date as 7 Nov. 1834.Despite the date on her stone, many of her descendants have her year of death as 1854.After Eliza’s death, Merit Williams married “Martha” Wells on 10 Dec. 1836 in Owen Co., KY.(“Martha” may be a misreading for “Marsha,” which is how some people pronounce “Marcia.”)Marcia C. Duvall had married John Wells on 20 Sep. 1824 in Owen Co., KY.And so, it is clear that Mareen and Martha Duvall had a daughter named Marcia, who first married John Wells, and at the time of her father’s death in 1844 was married to Merit Williams.
It then follows that Maria F.G. Duvall married a Reser/Resor/Reasor, and the Jefferson Peak Bible record tell us that it was William. If Maria had been born in 1797 she would have been two months shy of 15 at the birth of her first child. The Jefferson Peak Bible record has Maria born in 1796, but no exact date is given and the Duvall Bible record looks more reliable.Other dates in the Jefferson Peak Bible record are off by a few years.William Resor/Reasor died in 1852 in Owen Co., KY – not in 1850 as the Bible record states.
The birthdate of Richard Mareen Johnson Duvall is a bit of a mystery. The Mareen Duvall Bible record has him born on 5 Aug. 1809.It has his sister Marcia born on 15 Jan. 1807 and this is borne out by the 1850 census of the Merit Williams family. On the other hand, the Bible record for the William Mareen Duvall family, although not a contemporary document, has his father Richard M. Duvall born on 5 Aug. 1807.The 1807 date seems to be confirmed by his Death Cert. (age 92 at death on 17 Oct. 1899) and by various census records (age 44 in 1850, age 53 in 1860, age 62 in 1870 and age 73 in 1880.)The census records all indicate that he was born before 1809, and three show him born before 1808.I am inclined to believe the Mareen Duvall Bible record that Richard M.J. Duvall was born in 1809 and conclude that he actually believed that he was born in 1807.We will have to live with the mystery.
Summary – A review of what we now know about each child in the family
1 – Maria Duvall was born in May 1797.The Jefferson Peak family Bible record has her born in 1796, but if she had been born in May of 1796, then it would have been only five months after her parents’ marriage. She married William Reser/Resor/Reasor about 1811 and her daughter, Martha Malvina Resor was born 7 Mar. 1812.An excellent account of the family of Martha Malvina Resorand Jefferson Peak can be found on Ancestry.com.The tree is named “Our Family Tree Higgins/Hill.”Maria (Duvall) Resor died in 1838.Her husband, William Resor/Reasor died 25 Dec. 1852 in Owen Co., KY, according to a death record in that county. He was born in Scott Co, KY, according to the same record. In 1850 William Resor was listed on the census of Gallatin Co., KY, with the family of his his daughter, Sophia Jones.
