John Dye Sr and John Dye Jr of Sugar Creek Twp Hancock County Indiana
Looking for further info on John (E?) Dye Sr 1803 - 1886.
Born in Mason Kentucky
Buried in Abington Cemetery in Wayne County, IN*
**However, I believe he died in Hancock County, IN - but don't have death certificate.
His wife was Mary Ann Carson.
One of their sons was John E. Dye 1845 - 1916..
Born and died in Hancock County, IN and is buried in the Philadelphia Cemetery on US 40.
Wife was S. Henrietta Van Landringham.
John E. Dye Jr - - served with Reuben Riley - the Hoosier Poet, James Whitcomb Riley's father in both the Co G 8th Indiana Infantry and Co G 5th Cavalry 19th Regiment.
The elder Dye came to Hancock County as early as 1839. He owned several acres of land in Sugar Creek Township - occupation is always listed as a farmer.
The younger Dye served as a County Commissioner and was a school teacher and pharmacist. He was education at Greenfield and at the Knightstown Academy.
**One of the Dye's (I believe Sr) - would have been the owner/operator of an Inn that stood along the National Road in the town of Philadelphia. It is described as being the first inn west of the old wood Sugar Creek bridge.
I am trying to determine - - which one owned the Inn - - and what the name of it was.
**This is important because Mary Alice Smith who was the inspiration for the Hoosier Poet James Whitcomb Riley's Little Orphant Annie - left the Riley Home in August of 1862 and went to work in a Tavern owned by John Dye. There she would work the next six years of her life.
I was wondering if any family members might be able to help with this information.
Thanks
