Former St. Charles resident
Mrs. Catherine Woodmansee Easter
When Mrs. Catherine Woodmansee Easter, wife of Mr. J.D. Easter, passed away Monday, those who were closest to her knew it was the going out of a noble spirit. Calmly, peacefully, quietly, she went down into the valley of shadows and whispered as she went, I'll rest a little while." her beautiful death was the end of a beautiful life, the influence of which will abide through many generations, thought her presence is not here. Catherine Woodmansee was born near St. Clairville, Belmont county, O., August 13, 1831. There she lived until her marriage, May 14, 1850. Soon after the wedding, Mr. and Mrs. Easter came to St. Charles where they lived until 1863, when they moved to Chicago. In 1871, a few weeks before the Chicago fire, they moved to Evanston, and have lived in that city continuously, except from 1884 to 1897.These years were spent in Chicago. While living in St. Charles Mrs. Easter joined the Methodist Episcopal church, and on going to Chicago transferred her membership to the old Jefferson Street church, and later to Centenary church. Always interested in every good word and work, she became a member of the First Methodist church in Evanston, where her activity was marked. Mr. Easter, in her name, gave the Easter prize of $100 to the student in the university who wrote and pronounced the best English essay and among the old graduate of the college the interest in that contest is still a pleasurable memory. Mr. and Mrs. Easter were the parents of nine children, who survive her. Mrs. J. (John) Newton Lloyd of St. Charles is a daughter.
Mrs. Easter died of bronchial pneumonia, after an illness of two weeks. The obsequies were observed on Thursday.
