The given name "Harry" is not of German origin and isoften a nickname for "Henry/Heinrich" that gets handed down. Our EBELINGs are from near Frankfort, Germany, but I don't know their port of entry. They were in Chicago prior to 1852.
Most Germans had an honorary first name and went by their second--ie. Johann Henry. George Heinrich, etc.
I'm told there is an EBELING statue along the river in Munich, Germany that is a tribute to a Christopher EBELING--a poet/philosopher of long ago.
