Edgar and McKee Family, Chandos, (n. of Peterborough), Ontario
From what I know, my Samuel Edgar was born Jan. 18, 1814 in Boardmills, just outside of Belfast, Ireland. He and his family attended the First Boardmills Church.
Samuel Edgar and Margaret McKee and their family came to North America on November 27, 1860 via the Ship "City of Baltimore".The City of Baltimore went from Liverpool to New York City.So the family had to travel from Belfast, Ireland to Liverpool, England to board the ship and subsequently landed in New York City.I don't know how they travelled after that to the Province of Ontario, Canada. But apparently Samuel Edgar, according to his granddaugher, May Scott, daughter of Margaret Edgar, had come before the family to check everything out in Northern Ontario and had built a basic "cottage" out of timbers for his family. Samuel Edgar was a stone mason by trade.Samuel was a Presbyterian.
You know, my great, great grandmother, Margaret McKee was not "that impressed" with the state of this "home", that her husband had built, in the "middle of nowhere".The area where the Edgar/McKee family settled was called by affectionately by the family as "The Bush". This was a little area called "Chandos" north of Peterborough, Ontario.Margaret McKee actually sat down and cried when she arrived at the location where she was going to spend her life, according to her granddaugher, May Scott.I don't blame her. Margaret McKee left a nice little brick house in Belfast, Ireland to THIS!!!!!Poor woman. But Samuel liked the idea that he could "shoot any game he wanted" in Ontario because there were major restrictions in Northern Ireland at that time.Samuel also liked the fact that he was getting so much land for free and in Northern Ireland he just had a little plot.
Samuel Edgar's son, Robert McKee Edgar married Bella Bullied in Ontario and they eventually moved to Manitoba, Ontario and Robert McKee's children, grandchildren and great grandchildren settle near Red Deer, Alberta.
Samuel Edgar died in Chandos, Ontario, which, as I said, is north of Peterborough, Ontario, on Jan. 30, 1887.His wife, Margaret Agnes McKee, b. June 9, 1920, County Down, (probably just outside of Boardmills or maybe Belfast, Ireland) died on July 10, 1903, Chandos, Ontario.I have a copy of the actual letter her daughter, Mary Edgar wrote, concerning the death of her beloved mother, Margaret Agnes (McKee) Edgar, so this is a confirmed death date.I know Margaret had two brothers, Robert and, I believe, John Edgar.I do not know what became of them.
Anyone with more information, and especially a cousin who is related, PLEASE contact me (smile).Annie
