I am sorry, John, but AMERICA is the name of a continent and México is both the name of a Country and the name of a State in the same Country. United States of AMERICA is a Country to the north of México.
You can call AMERICANS to all the people that lives in the AMERICAN continent, so, for that matter, Tomas Alva Edison was an AMERICAN because he was an inhabitant of the AMERICAN continent. Being Mexican or from the USA, he still is AMERICAN.
