I'm looking for information on the wife of Sterling T. Wallis. He was born 21 Mar 1814 in SC and died 27 May 1904 in Forsyth Co., GA.He is buried in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, North East of Cumming, GA. His wife was Elizabeth. She was born 24 Feb 1813 in SC and died 03 Jun 1888 in Forsyth Co., GA. She is also buried in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.
In Mrs. Mabel Scruggs Sommerfeld's book, "Andrew Edwards, Rev. Sol., A Documentary: His Children - Allied Families - Charts" published in 1969, she says on page 12, "The Estate was administered by his brother-in-law Sterling Wallis" in reference to the will of Andrew J. Edwards. On page 24 she lists Sterling Wallis as the husband of Andrew, Jr. and Leanna Edwards's second child, Elizabeth. This is most likely not true. A careful reading of Andrew J. Edwards's will (FamilySearch.org, Historical Records Collection, Georgia, Probate Records, 1742-1975, Forsyth Co., Wills 1856-1939 vol A-B, image 34), shows that Andrew J. Edwards calls Sterling Wallis "my friend", not my brother-in-law or any other familial salutation.
Additionally, Sterling and Elizabeth had a daughter, Martha Elizabeth, who married William Thomas Cole. Martha Elizabeth Wallis Cole died 06 Dec 1936 in Cherokee Co., GA. She is buried in the Ballground City Cemetery, Ballground, GA. Her death certificate says her mother's name was Martha Elizabeth Scruggs. The informant was Martha Elizabeth Wallis Cole's daughter, Ocadelphia Cole, who married Thomas LaFayette Redd. So, Martha Elizabeth Wallis Cole's death certificate says that Sterling Wallis's wife was Martha Elizabeth Scruggs.
An examination of census records from the early 1800's in Laurens and Spartanburg counties SC shows that only two Scruggs's families had daughters old enough to be Martha Elizabeth, Edward Scruggs and Jesse Scruggs (1820). The 1830 census indicates that Edward Scruggs has a daughter old enough to be Martha Elizabeth, but the daughters in Jesse Scruggs's family are a couple of years too young, but Martha Elizabeth Scruggs Wallis's birth date on her headstone could be in error or the census taker in 1830 may have made a mistake.
Mrs. Mabel Scruggs Sommerfeld's book also contains a family chart for Edward Scruggs (pg. 21). There is a Martha who is born about 1815, but she marries Jonathan Halk and remains in Laurens county and dies at the age of about 100. There is also a daughter, Elizabeth, born in 1823, but nothing is known about her.
I haven't found any information on the Jesse Scruggs family in Spartanburg Co., SC or Forsyth Co., GA.
On the other hand it is well known that the Andrew J. Edwards family and members of the Edwards Scruggs family moved to Forsyth Co., GA in the 1840s.
I would really like to know if anyone has information about Sterling T. Wallis's wife
