Alma Alice Johnson was born on December 23, 1917, in Murray County, Minnesota to George and Wilhemina Leebens Ehlers. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school. Before her marriage, Alma worked in a restaurant in Fulda, Minnesota. On February 20, 1945, she and Hilmer Johnson were married at the American Lutheran Church parsonage in Avoca, Minnesota. Together they farmed the Johnson family farm and raised their four children. They retired in 1979 but remained on the farm. Hilmer passed away on October 23, 1995. Alma remained on the farm until October 2007, when she moved to Lindenwood Assisted Living in Slayton. Alma passed away on November 25, 2007, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Fall, South Dakota at the age of 89. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton where she was active in the W.E.L.C.A. group. Alma also belonged to an Extension Club and to a Birthday Club. Alma enjoyed reading mysteries, working on puzzle books, watching old movies and visiting with family and friends.
Survivors include her three children: Richard Johnson and his wife Linda, Blaine, MN; Douglas Johnson and wife Christina, Cincinnati, OH; and Nancy Johnson, Slayton, MN; three grandchildren: Jennifer, Kevin, and Grant Johnson.She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Hilmer; one daughter Marilyn Johnson; and five brothers and six sisters.
Funeral services were held at Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton, MN on November 30, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Ted Kunze officiating.The organist was Twyla Hungerford with special music by Heidi Winter.The pallbearers were Dale Vos, Monty Larson, Jim Gillette, Harris Johnson, Robert Prahm, and Norman Johnson. Interment at Slayton Memorial Gardens, Slayton, MN. Totzke Funeral Home of Slayton in charge of arrangements.
